Sheryl's Loyalty In Remember The Titans '

Set in the racially charged South, “Remember the Titans” is the story of 22 players, 16 games, two coaches, and one interracial team. One particularly important member of the team is 9-year-old Sheryl, the steadfast daughter of Coach Yoast. Her loyalty keeps Yoast in check, reminding him that football matters more than race ever will. Sheryl’s dedication is shown through her interactions with Herman Boone, the black coach who usurped her father’s position as head coach; her exchanges with her father; and her dedication to football.

At first, Sheryl’s loyalty to her father makes her wary of Coach Boone. However, once she sees Boone’s talent, she respects him as a leader and as a person. During football camp, Sheryl tells Coach Boone “You did a good job up here” (pg. 35), a stark contrast to the coldness she met him with when Boone went to the Yoast residence (pg. 6). This scene shows that she bases her trust not on race, but rather on skill. By the end of the movie, she has bonded with Boone’s family and extended her loyalty from just her father to them.

After “he worked so hard, mama left him” (pg. 1), Sheryl was all Yoast had. She helps him not only on the field, but also with his emotions: when he feels conflicted about leaving T.C. Williams and coaching at Loudon, Sheryl comforts him, saying “We’ll be alright, Coach” (pg. 9). They care so much about each other because all they have is football and each

It had nothing to do with entertainment and everything to do with how people felt about themselves.”…

Coach Coming to Town: Most people would say that when Coach Boone came into town it was a wrong thing, from my point it was the breakthrough for a lot of change and progression in town. If it wasn’t for Coach Boone becoming the new coach the town would of never realized the value of teamwork with the football players, the meaning of that it’s just not about race, and leadership. Coach Boone showed all of these traits throughout the movie, and this makes him going and being the new coach a wonderful change in the community. When Coach Boone came into town the football team was not getting along at all. Everyone in the community was against the fact that he couldn’t run the team, and since he was African American no one would respect him.…

In the early to mid 1900’s racism was a problem in the United States of America, where minority groups were treated poorly for being apart of a minority. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the many people to help abolish segregation, and he was supporting all minorities not just the black people. Remember the Titans took place during this time of segregation. The Titans-football team- was the only team in the state to have black and white americans play together. Coach Boone got rid of segregation on his team by 1 getting the players to get along, 2 he got them to respect each other, and 3 getting them to judge each other on their skill and personality instead of their skin color.…
