Christine Stansell describes and outlines the lives and culture of urban working-class women in New York City from the end of the Revolutionary War to the start of the Civil War. This period represents (at least the urban area of New York) the shift from the small city economics to the beginnings of the urban industrialization. However, these were the nameless individuals (reminiscent of the Many Headed Hydra in its use of the New Left rhetoric) who basically became entirely, a female “motley crew.” These were the individuals who left no mark on society or diaries extolling their life and their aspirations.…

The book I just read is called Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge. The biggest things this book talks about are the desires of a woman's heart, every little girls question, romancing God, romancing your husband, Gods way, and last but not least being a warrior princess. Chapter one starts off talking about how we, as women, feel guilt and shame by not meeting the expectations 'laid on us by our families, churches, and our culture' (chapter 1 pg. 6) and not to mention the famous proverbs 31 woman. It talks about how we feel 'unseen, unsought, and uncertain' (chapter 1 pg. 6). This is the reason woman have a feeling of failure, and that cause's us to wonder if we are 'too much' or 'not enough'.…

This research paper will critique Billing’s essay on the suitability of women in managerial jobs, which is considered a male norm. The critique will focus upon the data collection methods, literature review (secondary data collection), primary citations and the usage of theoretical concepts inherited from literature. Billing conducts a qualitative research interviewing 20 Swedish and Danish female managers, mostly mothers, on their journey and experiences being women managers. As a basis of study, Billing conducts a literature review for related work on male norms and the congruency between jobs and bodies in particularly gender, debating both notions. She argues against the generalization of male norm in management and calls for a more complex approach to understanding the experience of women in management.…

The author demonstrates four topics about women's issues that have not changed, one being “Men dominate many of the most esteemed professional fields and get paid more for their work”, which shows women are still being unrecognized in many workforces. The second issue that is expressed in the article is “work stress disproportionately impacts women” and for a women to succeed in the workplace by the expense of their physical well-being. In Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In: What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid, there is much discussion of men and women's roles in the workplace. Sandberg tells the story of her grandmothers determination to get an education when it wasn’t viewed as important for women to do so. This motivated Sandberg to attend college, where she found that women believed they could achieve anything. Women assumed they would be successful in a career -in a professional setting- as well as in their own home. Sadly, things did not evolve as quickly as Sandberg hoped they would for equality in the workplace.…

Between “Hear Her Roar” by Rana Foroohar, which in 2009 was published in Newsweek and “Life on the Global Assembly Line” by Barbara Ehrenreich and Annette Fuentes, among the first readings to recognize the importance of working women globally, we are able to realize how women in different regions of the country face everyday reality. The undeniable fact that women in the workforce, globally, have not yet reached a level of equality to men is at the heart of both “Hear Her Roar” and “Life on the Global Assembly Line”. For many decades, society has instinctively placed women in a subordinate position to men in all areas, but especially in the working world atmosphere. The statistics in “Hear Her Roar” prove how much women help the world…

The main idea of the book I choose the book “Act like a leader, think like a leader, by Herminia Ibarra, which is inspirational read for everyone who has a passion for leading. Ibarra, redefines the traditional leadership notion of “think first, and then act’’ by acting first and then thinking. She described The “Outsight Principle” which is the mine idea of this book. Through the implementation of the “outsight principle”, Ibarra believes that one can improve or develop into an effective leader. This principle attests that the only way to think like a leader is to first act it out and that is to come out of ones’ comfort zone by start doing changes and more experiences.…

At first glance you might think that My Antonia and The Great Gatsby have nothing in common. One is set in a small town on the great plains in the late 1800 's, while the other is set in the middle of bustling New York during the roaring 20 's. Although these two books are in different settings, they both provide important insight on characters and the effect of the setting on their development. The books both relate the injustice of women 's position in society but then diverge, telling stories of two different lifestyles. One in the country where hard work and determination is the rule of survival, the other in the center of New York and its metropolitan ideals. The authors of both of these books focus on the position of women in each time…
