Second-Wave Feminist Analysis

The modern social culture is one of female oppression and male ignorance and thus creates a toxic atmosphere neglecting women’s rights, proving that feminism has not progressed since the 1960s and 1970s. While some men and women will argue that equality has been achieved, the extent of that ‘equality’ has not been universal. This paper compares two differing opinions from Sheryl Sandberg and Bell Hooks on the state of feminism to analyze the extent that the second-wave feminist movement has progressed. With the accounts of sexual assault in the media, the lack of concern over women’s reproductive rights, and the disregard of professional qualifications overlooks, this paper argues that feminism has not progressed past its initial stages in …show more content…
She says that there is “Evidence that Clinton’s sex played a role in the nomination battle is well documented, as she confronted misogynist coverage that focused disproportionately on her appearance, the tone of her voice, and her husband’s past infidelity.” (398), and that “Palin, too, struggled to be perceived as a legitimate candidate: coverage of her campaign was disproportionately negative, for example, and much of it objectified her by focusing on nonsubstantive topics such as her looks and self-presentation.” (398). Hillary Clinton became the first woman who was recognized by a major political party as a Presidential Candidate. She also stood on the committee in charge of looking into Richard Nixon’s possible impeachment, was named the head of the Arkansas Education Standards Committee, and became the U.S. Secretary of State (CNN Library). All of these accomplishments are overlooked because she is old, and ugly, and has a husband who cheated on her, therefore, she is unfit to run a country. In contrast, Sarah Palin had the opposite experience. When John McCain saw that Hillary dropped out of the race in 2008 he named Palin his Vice President in the hopes that he would reign in the female voters because women will only vote for other women, not anyone based on their merits (CNN Library). Palin is liked so much because she is …show more content…
This is a completely ignorant point with regard to modern-day issues. Specifically speaking about rape in the United States, many states still outlaw abortions for victims of sexual assault and deny them the right to birth control and other reproductive health choices. In Arkansas, there was a law passed on January 26th, 2017 that creates a scenario where potentially a rapist could petition to deny an abortion based on his paternity of that child. In section 20-16-1804 Civil Remedies -- Attorney Fees of the “Act to create the Arkansas Unborn Child Protection 13 From Dismemberment Abortion Act”, subsection b (1) B states that “The father of the unborn child, if the father is 33 married to the woman at the time the dismemberment abortion was performed in 34 violation of this subchapter;” (case law). The only legal reason for an abortion in Arkansas is for the health of the mother, not in cases of rape or incest. With this new law in place, it could potentially create a scenario where a rapist petitions for his paternal rights and the woman must carry that baby to term, and require her rapists permission before adoption. This bill was created under the 91st General Assembly consisting of thirty-seven individuals, eleven of whom are female. This reiterates the notion that the decisions about women’s reproductive

I agree completely with both authors that Sarah Palin was not ready for Vice President of the United States. She came off as a babbling, backwoods idiot who didn’t know how to dress or talk. Although, I’m sure she was smarter than either of the authors gave her credit for. She was a conservative and both of the authors wrote for liberal papers.…

Frith’s Feminist Façade Considered an epic feminist text, Melika Burke pierces through the illusion of female freedom underpinning Year of Wonders to reveal its underlying paradox. Geraldine Brooks’s Year of Wonders (2001) is one of the most grievously misinterpreted and misunderstood texts of the twenty first century. Brooks’s (2009), who proudly identities as a “modern western feminists”, intertwines her experience as a Middle Eastern war correspondent where she observed the emancipatory potential of women with the historical scaffold of the 1665 Bubonic Plague to create a feminist utopian heroine: Anna. This rich exploration of the female identity has elevated the novel to an erroneously distinguished position by depicting the text as quintessentially feminist. Cultural Critic Lee (2012) encapsulates this prevailing interpretation by praising the “[s]trong feminist consciousness operating through Year of Wonders”.…

Rape or incest is already a huge crime in itself and to bring in abortion as a new life is developing is just double the crime. From the point of view of a former victim, she states, “I was an innocent victim of a horrible crime. I was not to blame for what the rapist did to me. But in choosing to abort, to kill the innocent child growing within me, I lowered myself to the level of the rapist.” -Patricia Ryan.…

Think about 2016 and the moments in history that have led us to this current day where in a couple of days we will possibly be experiencing the first woman president be inaugurated into office. Women had to come a long way and a lot had to change in order for the Democratic Nominee, Hillary Clinton, to even consider becoming president one day. The effects of women suffrage led to the start of the powerful feminist movement that changed the way women confronted social standards. Warrren K. Leffler points out, the beginning of women’s suffrage began in 1848 when Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott issued a meeting in Seneca Falls Convention in London to talk about “Social, civil, and religious rights of women” as well as to ratify the…

Some of the biggest controversies include our freedom of speech, religion, and our right to bear arms. These all have one detail in common; they are supposedly protected by our Constitution. However, one controversy still stands without the help of our amendments.…

In bell hooks’s essay, “Feminist Politics: Where We Stand”, she discusses the loss direction and meaning behind feminism, and therefore a loss of momentum as well. The word ‘feminism’ today has been pegged as a movement embraced by a group of man-hating, power hungry women who want everything men have. Thus, many women refuse to be identified as feminists. A newspaper article written by Sarah Boesveld in the National Post called ‘Not all feminists: How modern feminism has become complicated, messy and sometimes alienating’ discusses a post on Tumblr that said, “I don’t need ‘feminism’ because I don’t need a label defining me. It’s the 21st century in America and being female is seriously the best” (Boesveld).…

In the reading Feminism is for Everybody, bell hooks declares feminism as “a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression” (hooks, vii). Although this is a very simple and direct answer to the question of “what is feminism?” there is more to the question than the simple and laid out answer. By starting with what feminism is not, coming to an answer of what is feminism becomes much clearer.…
