“If compassion was the motivating factor behind all of our decisions, would our world not be a completely different place?” This wise question was proposed by famous singer and songwriter, Sheryl Crow. According to research reported by CNCS called, “The Health Benefits of Volunteering: A Review of Recent Research,” volunteering can lead to a much healthier lifestyle. Research has shown that those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional abilities, and lower rates of depression later in life. Volunteering gives you a sense of pride, and a feeling of accomplishment. This decreases your chance of depression because these feelings make you feel good about yourself, and boost your self-esteem. Also, CNCS found that volunteering benefits older people’s health the most, because most older people are retired, and are starting to lose their purpose in their community. Volunteering gives them this sense of purpose that they need. It makes them feel more important, and it makes them feel better about their lives. Next, another study showed evidence that people who start volunteering at an earlier stage, are less likely to suffer from poor health later in life. This shows that the earlier you start volunteering, the more beneficial it is for both you, and the people you are

According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, 61.8 million individuals in the United States contributed 8 billion hours of volunteerism in 2008 alone.…
