Sherry Turkle believes that modern technology such as texts or messages block the communication between people. Due to excessive use of messages and emails, people are afraid of making a call because it is much more likely to reveal the true feelings and “things could get out of control” (Turkle 378) when talking on the phone. First, the author starts off by referring to the history of unemployment of the USA workers due to the industrial revolution. This means that the same situation may happen today due to the development of automation. According to Kelly, robots are gradually taking our jobs that range from “manual labor to knowledge work”. (300) Currently, robots can do jobs like handwork much better than people do because robots barely make mistakes. Also, they are capable of the jobs which human can hardly finish like” looking for cancer cells”, “keeping track of every pitch” in baseball game(301). Should we panic about that? The answer of the author is no. He explains that the robots may not only create new jobs but also could give people opportunity to do the things they want to do. People now are able to do something that is impossible to be done several hundred years ago with the help of robots. New machines create new “activities”(307) so people have new jobs. Further more, robots help us know “what we should do next?”. Robots help people manage the laborious work so that they will have time for reflecting and thinking. Eventually, they will find their next goal. Robots actually take us to another level, leaving us less worrying about the lower-level demand. She insists that robots should do jobs for us for this could make us “more human”(312), which means we could focus on what we really want to do.
