For this project I interviewed Sherri Stirbus. Sherri is a Speech Language Pathologist for Children’s Hospital Colorado. She works at KidStreet. KidStreet is a day rehab program for young children with significant disabilities. Every child is required to have a feeding tube to be in the program. The children receive speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, art therapy, music therapy, psychology services and nursing services each week. KidStreet is an amazing place because it allows children to get all the services they need while their parents are at work. Sherri introduced me to a young male named David. David is one of the happiest kids around. His smile lit up the room. David was born at 36 weeks gestation due to premature …show more content…
However, his language delays definitely can impact his daily life and can lead to frustration when not able to communicate basic wants/needs. David’s frustration results in him screaming, crying and having a total meltdown. The older David gets, the more meltdowns he has. In the past year, Sherri says David has been able to use more and more sign language. He parents both took a course in sign language and continue to learn new sign to help David. Even though David has difficulties at KidStreet, his difficulties in communication have decreased at home. The only difficulty David has is not always getting all the attention because he has two siblings. I personally have spent time with David and other individuals with Down Syndrome. Since “down syndrome is a genetic disorder that involves birth defects, intellectual disabilities, characteristic facial features”, Down Syndrome will affect David for the rest of his life (Stanford Children). The other children at KidStreet do not have Down Syndrome and they have different difficulties when it comes to language and communication. I really enjoyed speaking with Sherri. She has so much love and passion for her clients and it makes me excited to be a SLP one day. It is amazing how a language disorder can affect every area of a child’s life, but David is lucky to have Sherri and KidStreet to help further his

Dear Children’s Hospital and Medical Center Administration, I am a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, and I have worked at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center for eleven years. I am writing to disclose information that I believe demonstrates a misuse of locus of authority, a breach of the American Medical Associations Code of Medical Ethics, and a breach of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center Code of Conduct by Dr. Bud Shaw. After verifying the facts of Dr. Shaw’s story with the employees that were on duty at the time of the incident, I have chosen to share the information with the administration of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. On October 15, 2015 in a personal conversation that took place in the cafeteria of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center between Dr. Sally Doe, Dr. Shaw, and myself; Dr. Bud Shaw shared the actions he took in the care of his daughter while she was a patient at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in late September of 2015.…

What we value, often times, is determined by sacrifice, for better or for worse, for self benefit or for the benefit of others. Dr. David Henry, from this novel, made a split second decision giving up his newborn daughter, born with down syndrome, and who may potentially die due to health defects. At this moment, he sacrificed a life he and that child would never know, whether it be that she survived or not. In reading the case study, “Is This Child Mislabeled,” there is a lot of great information on children with disabilities. In the case study there is a boy named Sergio, who is a third grader from Serbia, where he is now a student at Oakwood Elementary. He has been diagnosed as having a learning disability due to the fact that he tested poorly on the assessments that his new school required. In reading the article, and some very great points for The Iris Center Star Sheet, I believe, that Sergio has, in fact, been mislabeled as having a learning disability; however, with the help of Mrs. Evans, his new resource teacher, he is getting the help that is truly needed. To begin, Sergio was not assessed adequately.…

Every student has experienced a time when they struggled in school, whether they had a difficult time grasping a concept, had trouble answering a question or was unsure how to study for an exam. These are common struggles that many students face when they are in elementary school, high school, college, and even graduate school. However, being the one student that encounters all those difficulties altogether, make it very challenging to achieve in school, especially when they are stigmatized for having a learning disability. Students with learning disabilities can either have a negative or positive school experience based on the attitudes and behaviors of their fellow classmates and teachers. These students often have negative school experiences…
