The word Sherpa means people from the east. Before mountain climbing was popular the word Sherpa was known for a group of people who migrated from Nepal to Tibet. Now the word Sherpa is known for more as a job description. A Sherpa is a person who climbs a mountain like Mount Everest and goes ahead to set up a trail for mountain climbers to get up easily. A Sherpas job is to set up camp, manage the porters, ensure that loads of supplies are evenly distributed,and on top of that they are responsible for their groups safety.
The higher altitude jobs are more dangerous so Sherpas will get paid higher, but the job will require more experienced Sherpas. For a normal Sherpas it is easier for a Sherpa to to climb than a mountain climber because they might have a lot of experience. Also the Sherpas that work on Mount Everest live in the Everest region so their bodies are adapted to that region and because their lungs are used to not having a lot of air. Every year many Sherpas get frostbitten and lose their toes and fingers, or get killed in accidental falls. In 2002 the Nepalese government raised the Sherpa pay because of how many injuries/deaths Sherpas were getting every year because of how dangerous their job is.
