Depression takes away motivation because it makes a person feel not good enough and makes them not care. He would rather shut down from the world than try and see something better because it is so hard to do so. He is scared to make bonds with people because he is afraid that they are going to die like Allie and leave him alone. So he would rather push people away on their his terms. It makes things easier for him. For Armand Aubigny, he changed Drastically towards his wife and child. His wife Désirée was left on her adopted parents plantation from a party of Texans who were traveling though, so no one knew her full origins. When Armand found out she was pregnant things went swimmingly. When the baby was 3 months old though, he changed. The baby was black, which in the time period was frowned upon. Weeks later, he was burning their things when he found the letter explaining how it was his mother who “belong[ed] to the

Self-identity is a form of individuality that has been molded by the surroundings people enclose themselves with. Human beings are constantly interpreting who they are. The human mind is a stream of thought that is constantly churning in motion, while the evolution of the conscious awareness is a lifetime process of interpreting the world around us. Sherman Alexie, a Spokane-Coeur d'Alene American novelist, exemplifies the conflict of self-identity in his novel Flight, where he seeks to reveal the value of his ancestry from several tribes and render the importance of the daily challenges Native Americans face from within their history. One of the most prevalent editing techniques within the movie were flashbacks to Victor’s childhood. The many flashbacks that were seamlessly integrated into the plotline provided background for why Victor grew up the way he did. For example, when Victor and Thomas were eating at a restaurant, Thomas recalled a story when Arnold Joseph invited him to eat breakfast at Denny’s. As Thomas told his story, Victor only recalled the day his dad had left his family. He remembered throwing beer bottles at his dad’s truck, his mom arguing with his dad, his dad throwing his mother to the floor, and his dad taking off in his yellow truck.…

An inescapable aspect of growing up is that parts of life will change. Though one may not like these changes or want to accept them, they must. These changes, like the death of family members or people around them, can mold a person dramatically, and shape the way that they think of themselves and the world around them. The Catcher in The Rye exemplifies this idea perfectly through the main character’s, Holden’s, experiences as he recounts his life and his actions and experiences before being admitted into a mental hospital. Through the character of Holden Caulfield and the idea of death, J.D. Salinger provides a narrative about how the realities of life and modern society can shape a person as they develop and accept those concepts.…
