The world is a dilapidated jumble of heartbreak, corruption, and despair. In such a world, it is simply too easy for one to accept defeat and to wallow in the shadows and darkness forever. Some may find it preferable to the alternative, in fact, because to believe in a hope that will never liberate a person of his or her pain entirely may seem too heart-rending a path to take. However, author of the article “Stone Soup”” Barbara Kingsolver once said, “”Hope is a renewable option: If you run out of it by the end of the day, you get to start over in the morning.” Indeed, hope is not a fuel that can be exhausted; it is a pixie dust that sprinkles its magic on the world when the world least expects it to.…

Rejection characterizes the young American’s experience — carefully composed rejection letters from colleges threaten to fill mailboxes, job offers are extended and then denied, and romantic propositions are regularly shot down. The different scenarios leave one unsatisfied like a musical piece without a resolution, as the young scholar wishes to determine why exactly his four years of effort were incompatible with an admission to Harvard and the high school girl ponders the exact reasoning behind her crush’s denial of her “promposal.” Thus, the importance of addressing the reasoning behind rejection has only grown, as Samuel Johnson exemplifies in his refusal to obtain the archbishop of Canterbury’s patronage for an unknown mother’s son.…

Hope has endured for a quite lengthy amount of time upon or before events and circumstances in one’s life or the world in general. As time has progressed, analyzing the concepts of hope and setting goals has helped us create an understanding of how, why, and what it takes for people to succeed. One example of a nonfiction book that helps make a connection to hope is Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel Pink. By connecting hope and Pink’s novel together, hope supports Pink’s claim that autonomy, mastery, and purpose motivate people, helping them achieve and be successful.…

In Lear’s book Radical Hope, he talks about the cultural devastation of the Crow Indians. He proposes to cling to radical hope, because with the combination of courage and hope anything is possible. If Fromm were to approach the question of what to do in the face of cultural devastation, he would say that man must stay true to his original identity to be free. If Frankl were to respond to this question, he would say to search for a will to meaning, because when someone has meaning in his or her life, anything is possible.…

What other narratives can we build for the hero and the other figures? How to recover and subvert the utopian imaginary (outopos and eutopos) of the non-place and of the good-place of Thomas More? More’s utopia (or eutopia) as a good-place that doesn’t exist and is a metaphor for El Dorado? Or is it that the desire for utopia as transforming essence isn’t more than a mix between ou-topia (nowhere place) and eu-topia (happy place)? Or is it that the utopian elements of hope have been transmuted, reinvidicating an utopia of “real reality”, like the ones of Huxley (in “Brave New World”) and Orwell (“1984”)?…

The American Dream is the idea that anybody can become successful and powerful in America, which is commonly seen as the land of hopes, dreams, and opportunity. Regardless of the past and sometimes present, anybody can easily become somebody, as long as they have the discipline and willingness to commit and work hard for the future. However, based on the book Destiny of the Republic, which takes place post Civil War, the American Dream was not truly attainable by anybody. While existing socioeconomic status in families, allies, or unrelated achievements can give one a boost in power, the greatest factor that determined the attainability of the American Dream was one's dedication to success. In this book you can find hope hiding in every little corner, from how people will take on awful jobs just to get the potential of a better life for their family, to the Navratri festival giving girls a time to forget about their worries and just enjoy the nights of dancing and fun. The specific example of hope that I am going to be talking about is the amount of hope and time and effort the women of Annawadi put into making the Nine Nights of Dance festival. By pulling all their efforts into this single goal, it gives the girls a chance to get their minds off larger more gruesome topics of their everyday lives and realities. It gives them a period to just relax and dance all night and although it will not benefit them in anyway at the end of the day, it will still help them forget their troubles for a brief period. I can relate to this example from the book because I like to stress the importance of staying positive in my life.…
