Sherlock Jr Analysis

Sherlock Jr. is a shy projectionist/janitor who wants to be a private detective. He wants to propose to a pretty girl but another man (the Sheik) wants to propose to her too. The Sheik tries to get rid of him by stealing the girl's father’s pocket watch and pawning it to buy her an expensive gift. He then slips the receipt into the projectionist’s pocket and the police find it. He doesn't have much luck in real life but in his dreams, he is the famous and heroic detective Sherlock Jr. who faces danger and solves the crime. Walter Mitty is the manager of the negative assets sector of Life magazine, and has been working there for sixteen years. He is an escapist, daydreaming into a world of fantasy many times a day. Walter has a crush on the recently hired Cheryl Melhoff but he is too shy to ask her out on a date so he is trying to contact her on EHarmony. Both movies heavily rely on the concept of dreaming/daydreaming in order to make the movie more comedic and imaginative. Sherlock Jr. and Walter Mitty they both use dreams and daydreams to give themselves the life that they wanted over the life that they have. They make themselves brave, confident heroes, while in real life they’re quite the opposite. Sherlock Jr. dreams of being a detective and having the girl he loves and he's able to travel through the movies at the theater where he works. Walter Mitty dreams of being courageous, and fearless and getting the girl he has a crush on. The similarity is that both of their daydreams also have an aspect of realism that connects them to what they truly want to be and through the movie the audience gets to watch as they transform into the person they’ve been dreaming of
