Fictional crime has been around ever since crime was out on the streets. Detectives try help the police solve cases from murder to robbers to thieves, but each case as important as the one before. Some detectives just glide by the police not doing anything, but some stand out. Of all detectives, fictional and real, the most famous of all by far is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s, Sherlock Holmes.
Who created Sherlock? This famous fictional detective started to spread in 1887, when the first book was published, A Study in Scarlet. The British author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock, was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh whom Doyle meet in 1877. A Study in Scarlet, was written by Doyle in 3 weeks worth of time, when he was 27 years old (Ten Facts). His first book widely introduced the fictional detective and his partner, John H. Watson, but right from the start it grew universal popular. Sir. Doyle started to write more about the brilliant detective and his life solving cases with Watson. In 1890, he published his next book, The Sign of The Four, which was another big it, he decided to write another book, on Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, in 1902. When the last book of the four novels came out in 1915, The Valley of Fear, Sherlock had become beloved worldwide that Sir. Watson (Sherlock’s associate) accompanies him while solving mysteries. Watson and Holmes have worked together for 17 years and have created a significant relationship (Sherlock Holmes). Most of the books Doyle wrote is narrated by Watson. Their friendship started off as just being roommates, but then turning into accomplice. Before being partners with Holmes, Dr. Watson was a military surgeon in the British army. While Holmes is well-kept, Watson loves personal cleanness.
