Shelter Interview Reflection

The semester has been fun and interesting. I was able to realized what type of worker I had become so far. I love my job, it is my vocation to assist families to break chains and overcome difficulties. I got to know myself better, I have become a better critical thinker. I learned how to interview and work with families from where they are at the point they come to the shelter. It is not an easy job, because most of the times it is all about them and what the City can help them to get. This way of thinking from the families, it is taking me to a dilemma of is it worthy to work with these families if it is a 80% chance that they will come back to the shelter system. This way of thinking from the families is making difficult to create an independent

    1. What about your experience at Quinnipiac thus far prompted you to apply to be an Orientation Leader and why? What makes Quinnipiac different from the rest, is the community it sets forth for its faculty and students. Together we are one and can create a difference in each other’s lives. However, that sense of community could not be achieved through the simple action of blindly participating, but can be shaped through the guidance of our peers into who we are today.…

Dear Carolyn Boles Scholarship Committee, I have had a great first semester in college full of learning and meeting new people. I studied extremely hard the entire semester and was determined to get the best grades possible. My favorite class was psychology and I received a very good grade in the class, so I was asked to become a mentor for the class next school year. I also decided to work toward receiving a minor in health psychology because I loved the class so much. In another one of my classes, we learned about different health field careers in order to decide if nursing was right for us since it is such a competitive major at IUPUI.…

During this week’s assignment I found the interview of Dr. Allen Frances was very interesting. Being in the Human Services program here at SCC and wanting to become a social worker I have been told that I need to be familiar with the DSM-5. I definitely agree with him that normality is difficult to define and it has become a cultural concept rather than a medical concept. Dr. Allen Frances states that our society is already immersed in pill popping which I didn’t find surprising at all. My opinion and viewpoint towards this is I feel like sometimes people get diagnosed incorrectly but any easy solution to make someone feel better is by taking medications and switching them up if some aren’t working.…

Every day, volunteers and staff prepare a warm meal for the homeless. In her article, Lauren Mascarenhas stated “The organization aims to set aside blame and judgment as they aid the homeless” (Mascarenhas). This view of the homeless is very humble. When the staff is helping them out, they do not see them as people who sleep on the street everyday, in contrary they see past that and they treat them as if they were from a higher class.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

These methods include: the influence and push of housing programs, to guarantee that these programs will organize a new and stable home for individuals encountering extreme difficulty with homelessness, being able to recognize and connect with individuals encountering unending homelessness and immediately cause difference in their life for the better, to lower boundaries to the housing programs through group wide reception of “Housing First.” Seeking help from congress and looking for extra assets from Congress to make new units of lasting stable homes in essential in this plan. These methods were thought up by The Interagency Working Group on Ending Chronic Homelessness. They have built up a procedure to end homelessness in 2017 by expanding the accessibility of steady homing, and helping groups draw in more homeless individuals to home them easy and quickly. Providing a homeless individual with a shelter yes is helpful, but a group called Community Solutions recognized that giving these individuals a hospitable home with all the essentials to a healthy and comfortable environment created an even bigger impact (People Experiencing Chronic Homelessness).…

For this reflective journal I have chosen to reflect on the changes that have occurred throughout my placement, and how this has impacted my learning. I have been very blessed this semester to have a very stimulating and informational placement, however changes that occurred at my placement organization has undeniably impacted my learning. Approximately 6 months into my placement, my supervisor, Hadiya, chose to leave my placement organization, Harmony House, to move onto other job opportunities. Hadiya’s absence has impacted my ability to learn in my placement, however the impact has been largely positive. Due to Hadiya leaving Harmony House, I was able to gain another supervisor, Caitlin, and she acts as the housing advocate at Harmony House.…

Introduction Recently this fall, I had the opportunity to step out and conduct informational interview with with someone at a workplace where I would like to work in future and know more about the industry. In the process of finding the right personnel I came across various firms and workplaces related to my area of interest. First it seemed very uncomfortable to ask around for an informational interview but eventually it changed into interest of learning and researching more about workplaces and how the industry functions. While my research was ongoing, I was referred to Mr. Harmeet Singh by my brother Preet.…

The Interview The interview process went well. Even though I am familiar with this family, I still conducted the interview professionally. I started out by stating my name, that I am a Bachelor of Nursing Student and that the purpose of the interview is to learn more about the family and that everything discussed will be confidential. I began by asking Melissa questions on the structure and composition of her family, and I drew out a rough draft of a genogram as she was answering my questions and providing me with information.…
