Shelly: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Shelly is probably the highest quality deer head that has ever been found in a high school industrial technology department dumpster. This summer, a head of a buck was thrown out by the board office secretaries of Buckeye High School in Medina county. When asked why they would throw out such a high-quality deer head, they responded that it creeped them out and made them uncomfortable; although, it is evident that many feel otherwise. Benjamin Lutman, Buckeye Industrial Arts teacher talks about his thoughts upon first seeing Shelly, “Why are they throwing out such a quality stuffed deer. Shelly, as you named her, was such a nice thing.” Mr. Lutman describes Shelly, “Um... well she is not a she, Shelly is a he and has antlers and is a very …show more content…
Lutman illustrates the discovery of Shelly, “Well you and Sam found her and you wanted a place to put her, so we put her in the closet, but the board office secretary said we couldn’t keep Shelly. Then you moved Shelly to Samantha Ponomarenko’s mother’s vehicle.” The woman at the board office said that there was no way that Shelly could be kept on school property; she did not want the man who shot and gave them Shelly to know that Shelly was no longer in the board office. The woman seemed to think that the man would be very upset to learn that the deer was no longer residing inside of the board office. This woman believed that it was better for Shelly to be hidden in the dumpster and thrown away than to allow Shelly to live and be seen elsewhere on school property. In response to this, Shelly was then brought along with Ceanna and Sam to the Aldi’s and a cemetery before coming to stay at her temporary home of Ceanna’s …show more content…
Lutman owns. This man also has a second, sadder deer, named Nelly, who is mounted above the door of his office at Buckeye High School. Nelly is, “a deer that was found in a crack house, an abandoned crack house, in this basement, and mold was growing all over Nelly and Nelly is a terrible example of a taxidermist’s work,” Mr. Lutman states.
“There is no real comparison. Nelly is the worst of the worst and Shelly is the best of the best”, Mr. Lutman compares. Nelly has the quality of something that one expects to find in the trash. Nelly is much a much smaller deer than Shelly and is in a much more deteriorated state. Nelly’s fur is molted and the leather of her nose has cracked and fallen apart. There is also a thick layer of dust coating the entirety of Nelly. Overall, from the small sample size of deer heads that have been found in the trash and that currently reside at Buckeye High School, Shelly is obviously the more high-quality deer.
Currently, Shelly lives in the dirty, dusty loft of the Industrial Arts classroom. After her stay in the family room, Shelly was then snuck into this classroom under a blanket in order to prevent the nearby board office secretaries from seeing her. While this space does provide Shelly with a permanent home, it is questionable if this is this best place for

Up in the North woods, where the wolves howl and the bucks run wild, there lives a man who devotes his life to living off the land. This man, Jerry Saum, a crude and renegade type character, has lived in Saum, Minnesota for his whole life. Saum, MN lies 45 miles directly North of Bemidji, and two miles East of the Red Lake Indian Reservation. I have known Jerry Saum for five years, due to my deer hunting shack that sits four miles South of Saum. In my early years deer hunting up North, Jerry would frequently come down to the cabin, always wearing a Busch Light sweatshirt or the local Saum Fire Department crewneck.…

One of the least known animal species in Arkansas is the elk, a large relative to the white-tail deer. Many people assume that the elk was brought into Arkansas, but it has a long history in the state. Elk were native to the United States, and Arkansas was one of the states that they inhabited. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) has monitored their population throughout their existence in Arkansas. In the 1840s, the subspecies native to Arkansas, the eastern elk, went extinct.…

On the first day in Bertilak’s hunt, he arrives home with a deer; which is very much paralleled with the actions Gawain uses towards the lady. Deer’s are very shy, meek, animals that have no problem fleeing at the slightest noise, or smallest flicker of danger. Similarly, Gawain acts just like a deer when lady Bertilak first confronts him in his chambers. Although he does not run away, he uses the passive aggressive maneuver and pretends to be fast asleep – despite the fact he hears her entering his room. He does this in hopes to avoid a confrontation with the Lady.…

A large part of southern culture is hunting and I have been participating in that popular pastime since I was a little boy. Throughout history and in all different cultures around the globe one of the challenges that a boy must face in order to become a man is going on his first hunt, and making a kill. This shows that he is able to supply and support his family with food if need be. My dad began taking me deer hunting when I was about six or seven; I wasn’t allowed to actually carry a gun yet though.…

Mary Shelly wants to display to the readers that rejection can really take its toll on a human being because they do not feel accepted by the people around them. Shelly portrays this The creature prayed to be accepted by someone but no body tried to get to know him on the inside; they saw an ugly person and just assumed he had an ugly soul, when in reality all he wanted was love and compassion. People have a need to belong to a group and if you get rejected by the group you want to belong too then that would normally have a negative affect on your behavior and cause you to do stupid things. Countless studies have shown that rejection causes many people to take their anger out very easily on innocent bystanders. Rejection is a strong word…
