A story of Grief
“Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a realistic fiction short story about a 14-year-old boy whose parents have died and only his extremely loyal aunt would let him stay. In the beginning, no one wanted to take in a 14-year-old boy. No one except Aunt Esther, who was very loyal to the family. Michael had not liked his aunt and said she was selfish. Soon, Michael brings home a hermit crab, named Sluggo, and he and Aunt Esther try to bond. Aunt Esther didn’t know what the hermit crab did, but she tried for Michael. Finally, Michael and Aunt Esther buy a lot more hermit crabs, but put nail polish on Sluggo so he could stand out from the other crabs. Michael and Aunt Esther bonded with the crabs. He thinks to himself if he is going crazy. In paragraph 17, the author tells us, “Sometimes Michael was so sure that one of them was somewhere around him.” Showing Michael thinks he is going crazy about them. Also showing that Michael needs his parents. One final reason Michael grieves for his parents is he wants to leave Aunt Esthers. Aunt Esther tries to be nice, but she doesn’t understand what Michael is going through. She says Michael punishes her, but what she doesn’t understand is Michael is hurt internally and grieves for his loss. For example, in paragraph 22, Aunt Esther says, “I know he must grieve for his parents, but why punish me?” This tells that Aunt Esther knows that Michael grieves for his parents but she thinks he punishes her for it.
Michael is in deep, deep sorrow for his parents. One way is he still expects to see them. Another way is he thinks they are around him. A final way is he wants to get away from his Aunt. Throughout the story Michael grieves for his parents. He wants to get back with them. I know someone can connect with this horrid grief. They must have mixed feelings about it and must hurt inside. This story taught me that the most horrid crisis can turn into the greatest moment of your life. So always look forward to the future not the
