Major Depressive Disorder is a type of mood disorder that has a heavy emphasis on an individual having great feelings of sadness. There are many symptoms encountered such as anxiety, excess sleepiness, loss of appetite, social isolation, and thoughts of suicide to name a few. In the DSM-5 for depression there is constant fatigue or loss of energy, change in sleep, change in appetite, guilt/worthlessness, and often suicidal thoughts. And since you have to meet at least 5 of these criteria, it is safe to say that this disorder can also be an explanation for Shellie’s behaviour following her sex assault. By Shellie having depression it is evident in how she usually falls back into a funk after some time with no interest in sleeping; she frequently has difficulties sleeping due to her attack; she doesn't have a regular interest in eating; she feels as though she is unlovable and also worthless; has no interest in living life, and thinks she would be better off dead. If I could not diagnose Shellie with PTSD then I would definitely choose Major Depression
