Shelly was a family of black people who moved in the land next to Kraemer, however this caused conflict between the family and Kraemer as he told them they could not live there. The state however found this against the 14th and allowed the family to live in the neighborhood and stopped judicial force when they found "state action by virtue of the Supreme Court of Missouri’s decision to enforce the restrictive covenant. The Court found that state action includes actions by legislative bodies and also courts and judicial officials." (Shelly v Kraemer). The effect it had on the civil rights movement was that anyone regardless of color have the right live anywhere legally without judicial force.
In 1954, the Brown v Board of Education case the Supreme Court addressed the "separate yet equal" law for schooling in Kansas. Brown was a black girl who wanted to go to a school of white kids and the school didn't allow it, her parents sued the board of education. The court ruled it as " a violation of the 14th amendment and was therefore unconstitutional" (brown v board of education).
