Shell started as a small business formed in 1907 selling sea shells and has since grown to become part of a group called the Big Seven consisting of the seven big oil companies in the world. Shell Oil Corporation is now a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, one of the largest oil companies in the world. They operate in over 70 countries with 44,000 service stations and an average of 92,000 employees worldwide. With 22 refineries they produce approximately 3.7 million barrels of oil per day. Shell first published their Business Principles in 1976 as a sign of commitment to sustainable development, balancing short and long-term interests and to integrate economic, environmental and social considerations in their decision making. All employees, contractors and joint ventures are expected to work in line with these principles. They also expect their suppliers to apply equivalent principles. Shell aims to deliver shareholder value with four points from their mission statement. First by manufacturing and supplying oil products and services that satisfy the needs of its customers. Then the next two are to constantly achieve operational excellence and to conduct business in a safe, environmentally sustainable and economically optimum manner. The last point is employing a diverse, innovative and result-oriented team motivated to deliver excellence ("Our values", n.d.). Shell's approach to sustainability coincides with Carroll's four-part definition of sustainability by first addressing the economic requirements of being profitable by maximizing sales and minimizing cost. On their website, they even have a pyramid similar to the ones shown in the slides in class. They use the pyramid though, to break down their approach into three basic sections. The first section is running a safe, efficient, responsible and profitable business and is the base of the pyramid. This includes global standards and processes in place to manage safety both in the environment and community they work in. As the foundation of their approach, they aim to continuously improve the operations to prevent incidents and to identify and avoid them where possible. This is done in an attempt to minimize adverse environmental and social impacts and they report their performance in an annual sustainability report. The sustainability report has been done voluntarily every year since 1997. The second section is sharing wider benefits where they operate, meaning they give back to the communities they work in. When building in a new community, Shell invests into the community and begins its social commitment to the community. A new Shell facility means new job openings and they choose sourcing from local suppliers and pay all taxes and royalties that help develop the local economies.

Her critique is based on the notion that the concept of the rule of law – that everyone is equal -has been developed and adapted by Western states as a method to restrain the government. Turpel argument is not about the debate of individual and collative right, rather it is about rethinking how we think and fundamentally how we perceive our rights. It is important that Ontario Human Rights Code does not undermine other people’s human rights because they do not belong to the so-called dominant group. Her argument is that one cannot understand the difference of cultural relevance without letting go over your cultural view.…

When it comes to the case study of Shellie, my primary diagnosis of her would be that she is suffering from PTSD. PTSD is one of many mental health conditions that occurs when an individual is suffering from a terrifying experience, that in a way they had no control over what the outcome could be, even if they wanted. In this case Shellie was a young vulnerable 19 year old girl that maybe fell into the wrong crowd, and ended up being taken advantage of in a unpleasant way that no one should ever experience, and in this case she fell into a situation that involved her being intoxicated with no help from her “friends” and sadly being taken advantage of my multiple men. This can be a very terrifying act for anyone that is involved in such a heavy situation. Some of the main symptoms associated with…
