Shel Silverstein Sheldon Allan Silverstein was born on September 25, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Nathan and Helen Silverstein. Shel’s sister Peggy was born 4 years later. Shel grew up in Logan’s Square a working-class neighborhood in the northwest side of Chicago. No one knows very much about Shel’s early years. We know that he started drawing strange pictures at an early age, he also wrote stories to go with them. As a teenager Shel was not much of an athlete himself but he became a huge Chicago White Sox fan, he sold hot dogs and drinks at games so he could get in free. A few years later Shel decided to join the Army in 1950, he served in Korea and Japan. Shel went on to do many great things, he then passed away on May 10, 1999 in Key West Florida. …show more content…
He wrote many popular songs, poem etc. One great accomplishment was when Meryl Streep performed one of Silverstein’s songs called “I’m Checking Out”. This amazing song won a Golden Globe award and a best song Oscar nomination. I think the Shel Silverstein was a pretty successful
