Bangladesh is located in south Asia and has had a long and varied history. Over the past hundred years, Bangladesh has been a part of three septate states the British partisan of India, India, and Pakistan. While Bangladesh was part of Pakistan it was known as East Pakistan and was physical separated from Pakistan proper by India. At many times East Pakistan (Bangladesh) was at odds with Pakistan proper. Because of East Pakistan’s tension with Pakistan proper East Pakistan gained independence from Pakistan in 1971. The nation of Bangladesh is neighbored by India on all of its borders except for Myanmar on its very southern border. Because of its geographic location Bangladesh is primarily in a tropical climate for most of the year where it then switches to a monsoon climate. The tropical climate and riverine soil deposition have allowed Bangladesh to have a sizable natural resource production of timber and productive agriculture (CIA 2016). In addition to natural resources Bangladesh manufactures a large portion of the worlds textiles, this makes up a large portion of Bangladesh’s economy (CIA 2016). The population of Bangladesh is about 156,186,882 people who are predominately Muslim and ethnically Bengali (CIA 2016). Dhaka the capital of Bangladesh is located in the center of the country near the confluence of the Padma and the Brahmaputra rivers. When Hasina’s father was exiled out of Bangladesh because his political movement came under government scrutiny she served as his political representative more or less functioning as the leader of his political movement when he was gone. In 1975 just a few years after gaining independence from Pakistan Hasina’s father who was president of Bangladesh and her family was assassinated by a group of military officers when Hasina was out of the country in Germany. The assassinations subsequently lead to Hasina being exiled from Bangladesh to India for the next 6 years and the creation of a military government (Encyclopedia Britannica 2016). When Hasina finally returned to Bangladesh in the 1980s she quickly gained a leadership position in the Awami League the political party founded by her father. Hasina used her new positon with in the Awami League to advocate from democracy and quickly became a popular figure in Bangladesh. However, Hasina’s was not welcomed by all. Many people in Bangladesh saw Hasina as her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who was accused of gross and irresponsible mismanagement of the government before he died. Because of this many of her political rallies resulted in violence as opposition groups came to protest.
