"She Walks in Beauty" is a short lyrical famous poem that written in 1814 by Lord Byron. It was published with several poems in 1815 called “Hebrew Melodies”. The poem was written about Byron’s cousin, Anne Wilmot. Which he met her the night before where this poem was inspired by its beauty. Anne was in mourning, wearing a black shimmering dress set with spangles.
"She Walks in Beauty" can be seen as a love poem about a beautiful woman but it is not. It is just an admiration of a woman's beauty and the speaker thinks she's really gorgeous. however, it seems as directed to a lover but it is not because the speaker never says he's in love with her.
The Romanticism was a movement that took place during the 18th century. It has some characteristics that can be observed in Byron’s poem. First, we can clearly find a strong emotion as a source of a beautiful experience present in the poem. Second, the tendency to talk about nature to get a better description. The author constantly refers to the natural elements in order to describe his feelings when he met the woman that he was talking about in the best way. For examples, "night of cloudless climes", “starry skies”, “shade”, “ray” or “raven tress”. Third, literature tends to focus on female qualities. Therefore, poets are usually used sing to women to praise their qualities. This is exactly what Byron tries to do in this poem when he focused on the qualities of the woman that he has never met before and his feelings at that moment. Mostly, we find this Romantic characteristic in Middle Ages.
