Improved Essays
In the excerpts from On the Corruption of Morals in Russia, Shcherbatov is particularly disturbed by the fact that the desire for luxury and extravagance was becoming what drove court life and what was valued most by the Empress. Shcherbatov believes that values such as loyalty, nobility and devoutness were replaced by greed, ostentation and envy. Shcherbatov gives several examples of the declining morals of the Russian court, with the strongest example being that of Count Shuvalov. According to Shcherbatov, Count Shuvalov used a variety of means to cozy up to Empress Elizabeth and with the power that he gained used the State as a tool to enrich himself. His actions included the formation of monopolies, the weakening of marital laws, the establishment

A crisis of modernization was one of the many reasons that caused the collapse of the autocracy in Russia, and the first step to allowing Lenin and the Bolshevik party to eventually gain control of the state. In the 19th century, Russia was one of the largest and most backward states on the European continent. The peasants of the country remained serfs until the mid-1800s, and even when they gained their freedom, they were enslaved to debt and redemption payments to their landlords that they would never be able to pay back. When they gained their freedom and were given small plots of land, the legal ties peasants did have to the states were weakened as nobles enhanced their own rights. This left peasants feeling even more detached from their…

Ivan is not an obsequious person, but Tolstoy states that “from early youth (Ivan) was by nature attracted to people of high station as a fly is drawn to the light, assimilating their ways and views of life and establishing friendly relations with them.” C.S. Lewis would argue that this fact in itself is not immoral. In fact, it is almost inevitable. However, this lifestyle becomes dangerous if the desire to fit in overtakes an individual’s own passion or self-worth. Ivan’s obsession with this social standing becomes unhealthy, because his intentions are not genuine.…

The new business elite under the oligarchs had many defining characteristics and legacies that set them apart from other Russian elites such as members of the Soviet nomenklatura. By 2001, only a quarter of the elites had come from Moscow or St. Petersburg, 32 percent of oligarchs came from other cities, and 42 percent of the oligarchs came from small towns or the countryside, a contrast to urban elites in the Soviet past (Krystanovskaya, 2005). The oligarchs also made it much more common for politicians to move from industries to the government rather than from state services to government as it had been in the past. Previously, it common for public figures to retire as diplomats, but as the 20th century ended, politicians were more likely…
