This oral technique of dialogue by Darabont allows the audience to see his main purpose of conveying this theme of being being a " good thing and no good thing ever dies". His method of portrayal also assists the audiences understanding of hope being motivation for Andy as a character in the film.
In the visual text there is a lack of digetic soundtrack during prison scenes as the use of silence helps the audience witness the prison to be very lifeless . The verbal technique of music .can be seen through a mid shot where Andy locks himself in the office and plays Italian opera over the P.A system .The camera zooms to a close up where the audience observe Andy smiling for the first time in the movie . This was an intention by Darabont as it provokes the audience to feel a sense of victory as Andy's hope triumphs over the lack of life in the prison . The long shot of people standing in the prison courtyard captures multiple reactions of smiling facial expression and of joy as life has been restored through music in the prison . This is a key moment in the text where the directors main purpose to showcase the theme of hope is very evident , this is because Andy believes " whatever man may do to the body they can never kill the soul " . Some believe music is food for the soul and by playing opera ; Andy was able to give his inmates something the guards could not confiscate and that was hope .
