The Shawshank Redemption
On the surface the plot of the movie appears to be about, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a banker in Maine, who is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, a golf pro. Due to the heinous nature of the crime, and Andy’s measured and dispassionate demeanor, he is given two life sentences to be served out at Shawshank Prison. As the story line continues, the movie watcher is lead through the many trials and tribulations Andy must endure to eventually secure his escape through a meticulous series of calculated events, masterfully implemented by Andy.
“Hope” was an obvious choice as I attempted to condense the movie into one word. As I dug deeper, the word “courage” began to be surface as an overall arching depiction of the film. After reading chapter 1(Understanding Behavior, Human Relation, and Performance) in our text book, I came to the conclusion that the one word that best described The Shawshank Redemption was in fact “Leadership”.
To judge Andy solely based on his appearance, one would think him to be weak, soft or timid as evidence by the wager of an entire pack of cigarettes Red (the character

It appears that Andy was planning his escape from the time he was wrongly convicted of a murder he did not commit. Every conversation, every action was a calculated chess move designed to bring him closer to his eventual goal of escape. Andy’s willingness to crawl through human feces to secure his freedom is analogues to a Leader’s willingness to do whatever it takes within ethical boundaries to succeed. Unlike the rash of unethical CEO’s who have dominated our American culture for the last 20 years; Andy actually cared about his fellow inmate’s wellbeing. In his master plan he gained the confidence of the warden only to leverage that confidence to insure his eventual

However Andy’s thoughts on salvation and the warden's views on salvation are seen as two different subjects. The warden takes this quote in a literal way while Andy on the other hand, sees his salvation as “his means of escape, safely out of reach of the inspections” (Shmoop). The theme of The Shawshank Redemption, is summed up as friendship bonds. This friendship and coming together in a sense can also be seen throughout the entire movie, and is seen as one of the most important aspects of the…

Andy was incarcerated after murdering his entire family in pursuit of money he would gain in the event of their death. After committing this horrible act Andy showed no remorse, instead acting nonchalant and uncaring with their deaths, simply stating, “I don’t care what you do with them (Capote, 1965, p. 314).” Disregarding his own family's dead bodies as if they were trash, thinking that he had the right to kill his mother that's just how Andy’s brain worked. He was the only one significant person in his world which leaves him emotionless when it comes to others and has no care for their well being or survival. It was this strange thinking pattern that led Andy to plead insanity in order to have his death penalty remover.…

Ebert suggests that, “[Andy Dufresne] accepts the good and the bad as all part of some larger pattern than only he can fully see.” (The Shawshank Redemption Movie review, 1994). One could even say that Andy Dufresne works with the system in order to achieve his goals, playing with both the prisoners and guards to achieve his freedom. This is recognizable in the scenes where Dufresne utilizes his skills as a banker to assist the guards with their taxes. Consequently, Dufresne is securing his safety by becoming not only a prisoner, but now an asset.…

Unethical Business Issues in Shawshank Redemption” I selected the movie “Shawshank Redemption” to do my independent project on because the main character Andy Dufresne goes through multiple character changes that have an immense impact on the movie and it is a great movie. Andy Dufresne is an innocent man that was arrested for his wife’s murder, and he had not committed any crimes until he got in jail which plays in to the movie’s ironic feel. Andy even states in the film, “I had to come to prison to be a criminal.”…
