In both “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” written by Stephen King and in The Shawshank Redemption written and directed by Frank Darabont, Red tells us early in the story that Andy did not commit the crime he was Jailed for. Injustice can be defined many ways the most relevant being “violation of the rights of others; unjust or unfair action or treatment.” The theme of injustice is used throughout both works to further enhance and unfold the story.

Andy Dufresne was one of the few men that Red truly believed were innocent. For some time, it was only Andy and Red that knew and believed the truth. The first instance where injustice was shown was when Tommy Williams came to Shawshank. He claimed to have bunked with the man who might have committed the crime that Andy was put in prison for. Andy is turned away and punished by the warden when he brings this information to light. “The Sisters” were Shawshank’s resident rape gang. The sisters target people they think they can take or that appear weak. Not a lot of deliberation or discrimination, just people who look like victims. The sisters symbolize everything that's awful in the prison, so it's no surprise that they are unjust. He fought because his sense of hope was strengthened. Just because the injustice continued he did not back down instead he rose up to the

According to the textbook, “There is no doubt that most police officers are honest and strive to be ethical in all they do; however, examples of corruption and graft in law enforcement agencies are not difficult to find.” The Shawshank Redemption represents prison as a fountain of corruption activity, even though the prison is a part of justice system that has to serve as an example loyalty, transparency, and openness. All characters use the system for their own benefits, starting from Red, who can smuggle anything into the prison, then the wardens, who profit from forced prison labor. Andy’s willingness to launder Warden Norton’s slush money initially serves as a survival technique, a means of protecting himself by extending his good will…

To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee is written to address the horrendous issues of the 1930’s, The Great Depression, the Jim Crow Laws, and segregation. It explores a variety of themes, all of which affect the reader greatly. Its portrayal of white supremacy, injustice, and prejudice is evident in many occurrences during the novel. The way the characters react to these times of hardship, however, defines their real strength stated by Martin Luther King Jr with the quote “the ultimate measure is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”. These significant themes, white supremacy, injustice, and prejudice, are reflected through the characters Scout Finch, Atticus…

In fact, the jobbery of the prison wardens and their guards allows the prisoners to engage in a game of manipulation by which they manage to tentatively disrupt the prison system to their advantage. For instance, Andy Dufresne, the protagonist of the story, manages to adopt what Foucault calls a “strategy of struggle”, in “The Subject and Power” (794), which enables him to overcome the physical and mental constraints exercised by the prison institution. By offering financial advice and handling the Warden and the guards’ taxation forms and all their money dealings, Andy manages to enjoy certain privileges that distinguish him from other prisoners. Instead of doing laundry work, he is transferred to the prison library, in addition to being spared…

The simile of the air vent for the pressure cooker is a way that authorities let the dominated groups feel not dominated and have control over parts of their lives. Henceforth, those who are not in charge are led to the illusion of control. The constant pressure leads to the implosion and the destruction of the system, but as the authorities dominate and the dominated people taste the goodness of freedom and control of their lives, the authorities get more powerful. The dominated ones get used to the system and enjoy their freedom. This way, the constant rule over the subjects becomes more stable to continue the manipulation.…
