I find it amazing that a boy the age of a high school Junior is able to have such an incredible positive impact on the world. His name is Shawn Mendes, and he started out like the rest of us: making silly videos on YouTube. At the age of 13, Shawn began covering music acts such as Adele and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The world loved it, and, using his vocal talents, Mendes grew increasingly popular on social media sites YouTube and Vine. Now 17, the Canadian has grown a true cult following and is one of the world’s most popular up-and-coming pop icons. However, what stands out about Shawn Mendes is not his spectacular singing voice, but how he selflessly uses his newfound fame in a refreshing, magnanimous way: to benefit others.

First, we have to understand how much of an impact celebrities have on the lives of people. We saw that Shawn managed to raise nearly twenty-thousand dollars with a single post on social media. But our celebrities’ impact stretches far greater than fundraising. According to a study done by USA Weekend Magazine, over half of the teens interviewed said that they would be more likely to smoke, drink, or have sex if they saw their favorite celebrity doing those things. Similarly, many teens stated that they based their appearance off of their favorite stars, including clothing choice, piercings, tattoos, and even, in some cases, having dieted to achieve the same figure. This coincides with the University of Calgary’s finding that sixty percent of college students said their world views and/or personalities were influenced by celebrities.
