Shaw Library which sits on the edge of the Shaw neighborhood is one of the oldest libraries in D.C. The goals of the new neighborhood Library was to provide a new kind of library service, one with a strong emphasis on the updated media of communications and information. The new Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library: A Landmark of Social Change." During its first year of operation, the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw branch offered a variety of community activities, including workshops in photography, tutoring, crocheting, knitting, and exercising. It also offered poetry readings and art exhibits. The Shaw Library is on the triangular avenue of Rhode Island Avenue and 8th Streets. It contained 20,000 square foot of space and was one of the largest libraries in DC. The library was dedicated September 27, 1975 with festivities that included a parade, a musical program, and the presentation of the library's key by Mayor Walter E. Washington. Planning of the Shaw library took place within the commission in 1965, but did not receive funding until 1969. It was renamed in honor of the first chairman of D.C who was an active Shaw resident. Since its opening, the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Library Branch had become a center for community activity. During the time of 1975 in the city African Americans were politically and …show more content…
