Most Asian youth are stressed by their parents about their performance in school, where they will go for post secondary education, etc. Putting these burdens on children will result in a large psychological barrier in their minds, as well as lower self esteem (should they not meet their expectations), which makes them think things such as “I can’t do this”, or “I am not worth anything if I don't accomplish these things”, etc. In the story “Two Kinds”, Jing Mei is constantly being tested and pressured by her mother because she is trying to make her “the best she can be”.
