During semester, 7VBR was given the opportunity to read, discuss and analyse the messages conveyed in the text-free book, The Arrival by Shaun Tan. Not only were we enlightened by such an intriguing style of presenting a plot, but also to the text-heavy kind. Reading individual books, was great. I could see girl's enjoying their stories and picking up real life geographical, historical, cultural and even psychological insight along the way, as many of the books we read were based off true journey stories. The Red Tree (Shaun Tan, 2001) is a children’s picture book that is both written and illustrated by Shaun Tan. The Red Tree is a book about depression, despair and ultimately, hope. The book follows a girl struggling with depression who, at the end of the book, finds hope in the form of a red tree. For a picture book to be successful, both the illustrations and written text generally can exist independently, but complement each other. There is a strong marriage between the written and visual language in Tan’s book that creates a harmonious connection to powerfully and effectively represent depression.…

In the book Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda is a freshman who struggles with her first year of highschool. She called the police during a summer party and now the entire school hates her. Melinda is filled with fear, anxiety, and depression and is alone with no support. In these two plays, it is the lies that construct a wall between each protagonist and the society they live in. The web of lies created prevents the achievement of each individuals initially definition of success. Though neither protagonist is able to uphold their initial goal, a state of happiness is still reached, because Jack is able to stay with Gwendolyn and Nora dismisses her relationship on her own terms.
