From the first beginning, the writer states the trouble of Racheal and then express that Rachael is a feminist, an independent woman but also at the same time, she believes in intensive mothering and there is no doubt that she think her daughter, Kristin is more important than her career, which can be seen through her behavior like breast feeding, taking her daughter to class. Spending time and energy that could have helped her get promoted on her daughter, for many self-interested, efficiency-minded women is impossible and irrational; thus there is a cultural contradiction between the individual interest and the proper method of raising a kid that women believe in(Hays, 1996). Unlike women, men have more freedom to chase after their business and do have to look after the children, because they are considered to be succeed in business instead of staying at home doing the housework. However, when their work is too busy, it will also cause some troubles to their family life or their relationship. In TV shows or movies we can always see such a scene: a woman crying and asked a man if his work is more important than her and begging the man not leave to work. Sometimes the man will choose to change a job or break up with the girl. From the man’s choice, people can see the confrontation of two values, the economic life value which means the man’s business or the intimate life value, the relationship with the woman. What’s more, not only in the intimate life, the choice of man will also have influence on his family life. If a man is too obsessed with earning money, he may not have much time to be with his children and to care about his whole family but only earn the money. For those migratory worker, the economic driven separation are stressful and can change the whole family structure; thus lead to the damage to the family life (Wray, 2012).
