Sharks have many benefits in their habitat, starting with population control of certain sea creatures. Being at the top of the food chain, they eat other creatures that would overpopulate and have cumulative damages to the habitat. By maintaining a healthy amount of sharks alive it is possible to maintain a healthy and sustainable population of other sea creatures.

There is actually a very lucrative enterprise of diving with sharks without protection of cages or any obstacle between the diver and shark. As long as certain precautions are taken into consideration and common sense the sharks will not instinctively attack a diver.

Places like Aruba, Mexico, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are taking advantage of their local shark population and the interest of tourists in diving along the sharks. This alone besides creating jobs helps the local economy. Making a shark worth more alive than dead, even if you were to sell the meat at the highest possible price you could not make as much profit as with the shark alive. A tourist that travels to a place to dive with sharks will pay airfare, hotel, vacation expenses, and the actual dive.
