Shared governance model is a shared decision-making model where board members, physicians, management, and nurses make their own decisions and determine whether they are appropriate or not (Marquis & Houston, 2015). This type of organization structure was developed in 1980 as an alternative to traditional authoritative structures (Marquis & Houston, 2015). This decentralized decision-making model is very innovative and it is most successful when responsibility and accountability are shared, since it gives nurses more control over the type of care they want to provide for their patients.
