People need to go through hardships to become stronger, so they can have a better future. In the book, Shanghai Girls, by Lisa See, some of the characters experience hardships through their lifestyles, relationships, and with themselves. However, the manage to get past the tough times in their lives, so they can move on forward to a better life.

War means sacrificing many things, such as something as simple as food. For May and Pearl, going through the war is one of toughest experiences they face in their lives. As a result of the war, they learn to make use of every little thing they have and they start to appreciate the little things in life, like proper shelter. So, even when they are faced with problems later on in their lives, they do not take anything for granted because they realize that their situation could be so much worse, like having to go through another war. Lastly, Pearl, as a wife in a Chinese household, must learn how to do all of her duties properly, without any prior knowledge or experience. For example, Pearl explains the various tasks she must perform on a daily basis when she says, "In Shanghai, May and I had servants. Now I am the servant.... I empty the spittoon and put out extra containers for the shells of watermelon seeds my in-laws nibble. I wash the floors and the windows. While, Yen-Yen teaches me to make soup," (See 136). Pearl needs to learn many new skills to please her in-laws, which is a bit hard for her at first, however, by gaining these skills she becomes more independent, as she does not rely on others to do her daily tasks.
