Shang Dynasty Compare And Contrast Essay

Rome and China’s Shang Dynasty are like twins; they are nearly the same in how they functioned. However, no matter how alike they may seem to be, these prime empires had differences. Among their similarities there is the likeness of what they contributed to the world, how they started before gaining territorial dominance, and a distinction in their beliefs.
Rome and the Shang Dynasty have similar contributions to the world. Benefactions from both empires that bear a similarity is the creation of everyday-use systems like writing and a code of laws, and the creation of art such as pottery and metalwork. The Shang Dynasty believed in divination and dualism in nature. This means that they thought they could predict the future through supernatural causes and that nature was divided into two polar opposites. During the time they reigned, the people of the Shang Dynasty thought they could predict the future through the burning of inscribed turtle shells or cattle bones, which would later be interpreted by a priest. Their dualism belief is based on the concept there is an opposite within everything, and that everything is interdependent: there is no independence in nature. The harmonious force of Yin and yang represents this, with yin reflecting darkness and the earth and yang representing heaven and light, While the Shang were clairvoyant and believed in dualism, the Romans had their belief in gods. They thought that there were gods who were responsible for nearly everything, such as Minerva, the patron goddess of war and wisdom and Neptune, the patron god of the seas. Because of this, the Romans have set up multiple shrines and greatly worshipped a multitude of other godly figures throughout their reign.
