He grew up in Penticton, British Columbia, with his grandparents and was educated at Okanagan College. Koyczan was bullied throughout most of his life but it didn’t stop him. In 2000, he became the first Canadian to win the Individual Championship title at the National Poetry Slam. After this he was part of a documentary tv show about poets. Koyczan has also published three books which include: Visiting Hours, Stickboy, and Our Deathbeds will be Thirsty. He also performed a variation on his “We Are More” piece at the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Through this he got to where he is now, writing poetry as well as touring and speaking to all different types of people that have gone through the things that he writes about.
