Genre Study: Shane Dawson Conspiracy Theories
The genre for this study is conspiracy videos. Conspiracy videos are based mainly on theories. Conspiracy theories are an explanation of an event or situation that creates an unjustified conspiracy, generally, one involving an illegal or damaging act carried out by the government or other powerful figures. These theories can range from simple things such as the way something was once pronounced, to the cause of world tragedies. Conspiracy theories often produce hypotheses that test the accuracy of history or well-known facts. Shane Dawson’s YouTube Conspiracy videos combine theories, and ideas such as Mandela effects, underlying meanings, and rumors. Mandela effect is the observed occurrence of

By including the title of a popular movie, Shane was able to draw the viewers in with what some may call “click bait”, click bait is when you include something appealing to the viewers that will in hopes cause them to want to watch your video. In some cases, people use false click bait, but in this case, it wasn’t completely false since Shane did include a Toy Story conspiracy.
The theory was that The Walking Dead was based on Toy Story. In Shane’s video, he states that “both have a hero (sheriff), both have a group of misfits, both Sheriff’s have a child that they love more than anything. The sheriff’s best friend is a super manly officer of the law, then the kid grows fond of the hero’s best friend, the hero gets mad they have a big fight, eventually, the friend is killed.” etc. Shane did a good job at explaining this theory, by including side by side pictures from both Toy Story and The Walking Dead.
This video also included other theories about classics such as Willy Wonka and The Wizard Of Oz. This particular video has the highest views out of all of his conspiracy videos, with over six and a half million views! This could be a result of the click bait that was discussed earlier, due to the fact that Toy Story is a well-known movie, making it

This video seems as if it is not very thought out, and the theories included don’t have much evidence to back them up. This may have caused the views to be lower, with only a little over five million views compared to over six million. Also, the title of this video was “youtuber conspiracy theories” but yet none of the theories included anything about YouTuber's. This is the type of false click bait that was mentioned earlier.
A few of the theories mentioned in this video were about smurfs, ash from Pokemon and Lizzie Mcguire being schizophrenic. The biggest theory discussed in this video was about how Rebecca Black’s song Friday may be about JFK’s assassination. Her song included lines like “gotta get down on Friday” which were the words that JFK’s security yelled at his wife at the time of the assassination, coincidentally on a Friday.
There are many types of conspiracy theories, some of which are convincing, and some of which are obviously false. Conspiracy theories may be just simply, theories but many have some logic to them. Always look at conspiracy theories with an open mind, but remember don’t believe everything that you see on the internet. These Three videos are good examples of your typical conspiracy videos, because they are all under fifteen minutes long, include some form of clickbait, and focus on well-known subjects. When it comes to the genre of Conspiracy the amount and type

In the essay “What’s Happened to Disney Films?” author John Evans states the concerns of parents with regards to Disney motion pictures and how they are not as child-friendly as they were in the 1960’s compared to the 1990’s. Evans focus on the issues brought about in these films ranging from the use of profanities to violence, which should not be in Disney films. I understand the logic behind the authors position, he believes that the content of Disney films has taken a turn for the worse. Firstly, the author states that Disney has become a conglomerate having many subsidiaries and that it has had troubling effects on what Disney considers child-friendly.…

I think the reason why people have a tendency to find conspiracy theories about very famous people rather than about common people because it is an “eye-catching” to know more about famous vs common people. With the social media being around us, we are more eager to read and gossip more about and mostly questioning with using “who what where when & how”. Which is why people don’t tend to find theories about common people since to them they are just “ordinary” rather than “famous people”. With Chrysalids, the writer John Wyndam has written many other novels and was known for one of the most outstanding success author. The conspiracy theory is antisemitic.…

The “CSI Effect” which is the effect of crime television shows on the verdicts made in court cases or on other aspects of the criminal justice system. The perceived rise in acquittals can also plausibly by explained without any reference either to watching CSI or to view crime drama more generally. Tyler (2006), stated, “With an ever-increasing number of crime television programs in which forensic tests are used to solve a case in the course of a single episode. Many criminal justice officials have begun to worry that the public may believe that forensic evidence is easy to obtain, quick to test, and free of potential flaws” (pp. 1050-1085).…

Conspiracy theories have become almost a big trend in American culture. Many of these conspiracy theories relate back to the American government, and usually not in a good way. One of the most well known conspiracies is the Malcolm X assassination. Malcolm X was a prominent civil rights figure during the 1950s and 1960s. He fought for equality amongst White Americans and African Americans, which was seen as a threat by many White Americans.…

Firstly the two examples used, Fahrenheit 911 and Bowling for Columbine, were both interactive documentaries, which bring a more depth to a film showing unscripted reactions of the Americas public and politicians. He manipulates his interviewee’s with both his appearance, looking very average and unintimidating without professional clothing such as a suit, and how he first introduces himself choosing his phrasing carefully to seem as if he is on their side and empathizes with them. This brings a certain style to his films that is distinctive to Michael Moore, and works effectively to convey the usually highly contested arguments or political views. I believe that Michael Moore’s style is effective however his content and behavior does sometimes come across as mildly rude or business orientated rather then empathetic. The music/soundtrack brings a more sarcastic side to his film and adds a type of dark humor to his films.…

This video is aimed towards showing homosexuals as dangerous people, and how they cannot be trusted. The director doesn’t show how straight people prey on young kids more often than homosexuals. This film has no back up or a claim to what it is presiding, it is stating random facts in which they believe to be true. This film lacks credibility, and the film is extremely biased and showcases homosexuals as a threat or a virus that will be caught if not careful. This film tries to make everything about homosexuals a bad thing, that being homosexual is dangerous and that you should go near one.…

The Kennedy Assassination There are many conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, (JFK). One of the most prominent, is that lone gunman and communist sympathizer Lee Harvey Oswald, on his own accord, took matters into his own hand and singlehandedly planned and executed the President of the United States of America. Another theory was that Oswald was a pawn in a deadly game of politics and mafia wars and was directed by the powers that be to kill JFK, and in an effort to prevent him from ever exposing the plot, he too was murdered in cold blood. Curiously, the theory that weighs in most heavily is that Lee Harvey Oswald was framed for the murder of JFK. Popular conspiracy theories claimed the “government” was behind it and the murder was in retaliation for a political upset, specifically, the Bay of Pigs conflict in Cuba (Polidoro, 2005).…
