The genre for this study is conspiracy videos. Conspiracy videos are based mainly on theories. Conspiracy theories are an explanation of an event or situation that creates an unjustified conspiracy, generally, one involving an illegal or damaging act carried out by the government or other powerful figures. These theories can range from simple things such as the way something was once pronounced, to the cause of world tragedies. Conspiracy theories often produce hypotheses that test the accuracy of history or well-known facts. Shane Dawson’s YouTube Conspiracy videos combine theories, and ideas such as Mandela effects, underlying meanings, and rumors. Mandela effect is the observed occurrence of …show more content…
By including the title of a popular movie, Shane was able to draw the viewers in with what some may call “click bait”, click bait is when you include something appealing to the viewers that will in hopes cause them to want to watch your video. In some cases, people use false click bait, but in this case, it wasn’t completely false since Shane did include a Toy Story conspiracy.
The theory was that The Walking Dead was based on Toy Story. In Shane’s video, he states that “both have a hero (sheriff), both have a group of misfits, both Sheriff’s have a child that they love more than anything. The sheriff’s best friend is a super manly officer of the law, then the kid grows fond of the hero’s best friend, the hero gets mad they have a big fight, eventually, the friend is killed.” etc. Shane did a good job at explaining this theory, by including side by side pictures from both Toy Story and The Walking Dead.
This video also included other theories about classics such as Willy Wonka and The Wizard Of Oz. This particular video has the highest views out of all of his conspiracy videos, with over six and a half million views! This could be a result of the click bait that was discussed earlier, due to the fact that Toy Story is a well-known movie, making it …show more content…
This video seems as if it is not very thought out, and the theories included don’t have much evidence to back them up. This may have caused the views to be lower, with only a little over five million views compared to over six million. Also, the title of this video was “youtuber conspiracy theories” but yet none of the theories included anything about YouTuber's. This is the type of false click bait that was mentioned earlier.
A few of the theories mentioned in this video were about smurfs, ash from Pokemon and Lizzie Mcguire being schizophrenic. The biggest theory discussed in this video was about how Rebecca Black’s song Friday may be about JFK’s assassination. Her song included lines like “gotta get down on Friday” which were the words that JFK’s security yelled at his wife at the time of the assassination, coincidentally on a Friday.
There are many types of conspiracy theories, some of which are convincing, and some of which are obviously false. Conspiracy theories may be just simply, theories but many have some logic to them. Always look at conspiracy theories with an open mind, but remember don’t believe everything that you see on the internet. These Three videos are good examples of your typical conspiracy videos, because they are all under fifteen minutes long, include some form of clickbait, and focus on well-known subjects. When it comes to the genre of Conspiracy the amount and type
