Shame By Dick Gregory Summary

In the short story "Shame", Dick Gregory shares his story of shame and embarrasment at school. He had no father, therefore his family was on relief. Sometimes they didnt have enough money to eat at home. Mr. Gregory would steal food out of the other childrens ' lunch, or eat paste. He said " paste doesn 't taste too bad when you 're hungry." He couldn 't focus in class due to being hungry, so his teacher gave him a special seat in class called the "idiot seat". One day his teacher was asking students in class how much their fathers would be donating to the community chest for negros on relief. Gregory was in love with a girl named Helene Tucker. "It has been all over the news and social media, from a laptop shooting dad, to a mom frustrated with her sons repeated criminal activity", the reported noted. Many parents found public shaming to be an acceptable, if nothing else, form of discipline.Others said it was both inappropriate and ineffective.A question was asked, "When is it ok to public shame a child?" In my opinion, depending on what the crime or misbehavior was, it is acceptable. If a child were to make a bad grade or wet their pants, something of that nature, I believe that public shaming is totally unacceptable. Adam and Eve, the first human beings on Earth, felt these kinds of shame. "Humility is what you feel when you 're in the presence of someone who is superior to you. He may not criticize or embarrass you, but the very fact that he is much greater than you can make you feel small. And that is shame in a positive sense." For example, Adam saw a sage on the sde of the road and asked "Why do you appear so ugly"? "Don 't complain to me, complain to my maker!" In other words, the man is saying that he didnt make hisself ugly, God created him. Therefore, ask
