Shakespeare's Use Of Suspense In Macbeth

Mystery, Tension, Suspense are key text structures that makes readers want to continue reading. Shakespeare effectively used these text structures by manipulating event order, and time to make readers more curious on what is going to happen next. According to the text “Macbeth” Act 2 Scene 1 Line 47 “And on thy blade and dungeon gouts of blood, which was not so before”. This means that in this part of the text Shakespeare is using mystery Shakespeare to make readers feel like as if they cannot understand why Macbeth is hallucinating about a dagger dripping with blood. Shakespeare has used mystery in that part of the text to make readers feel more interested in what will happen next. Another example is in Act 2 Scene 1 Line 63 it states, “I go and it is done. The bell invites me. Hear not Duncan, for it is a knell that summons thee to heaven or to hell”. As a result of that line in Shakespeare created suspense. He did this because in that point of the text he knew readers were having a feeling of uncertainty since they were not sure if Duncan hear the bell or not. It would change dramatically because even though they were best friends that had different mind sets. The organizational text structure I would have used to create mystery, tension and suspense would have been similar to Shakespeare’s since Lady Macbeth would have still fueled Macbeth to do something he does not want to but is thinking about in the back of his head. I would have structured the play so elicit emotion by using key text structures and using words or phrases to manipulate time and setting. I would have done this because with out things like that readers would find the play
