The most central and obsessed character in William Shakespeare’s Othello, is Iago. His undoing of Othello and Desdemona’s marriage is what makes his deception captivating and therefore satisfying to watch. The ingenious of Iago’s plot to destroy Othello is what makes him the most interesting character. Shakespeare crafts Iago’s character so well it creates an original storyline which has proved to be very versatile. Iago sees himself as a loser, a person who has lost all of their worth and therefore puts all of his energy into ruining the reputations of the people around him. “Good name in man and woman, dear my lord…But he that filches me from my good name Robs me of that which not enriches him and makes me poor indeed.” In the times of Shakespeare, reputation was everything, to have it tarnished would be devastating. However, Iago’s reputation has not be tarnished, he believes his status should be higher because he has earned the right to lieutenant. Instead of proving himself, he seeks to destroy Cassio, getting him demoted after an irresponsible drunken brawl and therefore ruining his reputation. “You have lost no reputation at all unless you repute yourself such a loser.” Iago uses this to justify his own actions. He believes he is a loser and therefore can commit immoral acts. With Cassio out of the way it is easier to manipulate Othello. “Oh beware my lord of jealousy, it is the green eyed monster which doth moth the meat it feeds on.” Iago sets out to cause chaos. Convincing Othello of Desdemona’s infertility with Cassio, meanwhile telling Cassio to seek out Desdemona for her help, all the while appearing honest. Iago has this fire to destroy Othello. However, what compels the audience is the fact Iago never reveals his motives. Human nature requires us to always look for an answer, to ask questions and seek out the answers. This is why Shakespeare’s plays have survived over time as this desire has lived on. Iago has betrayed Othello for unknown reasons. However, audience is finally offered some relief by Iago being unmasked. Shakespeare provides his audience with false hope as when Iago is finally captured by Lodovico we believe we may get the truth. “O Spatan dog, look on the tragic loading of this bed. This is thy work. The object poisons sight, let it be hid.” Many people in the audience at the time and today will be conflicted over who they feel is responsible for the death in this play. Iago choses to deceive the audience by remaining silent and therefore never taking responsibility. It his own satisfaction of knowing he succeed. He was never “Honest Iago” and so the mystery lives on. “I will never speak another word.” in some way referring to himself as hell and as the devil. Iago is the most interesting character because of his of his inhumane nature, and his deceitful personality. His plan succeed because he was so serious about it. The characters couldn't see through Iago and were too naive to realise his true nature, which in the end killed them. The fact that Iago doesn't die supports the idea Iago really
