In Holinshed’s Chronicles Macbeth is introduced as a great gentleman, and as in Shakespeare’s play Macbeth is sent by King Duncan to crush the rebellion led by Macdonwald. but, to ensure Macbeth is viewed early in the play as really courageous, Shakespeare changes Macbeth’s role in the role of Macdonwald. Shakespeare’s Macbeth is an intelligent man, ambitious and spirited. but, Shakespeare separates from Buchanan’s role of Macbeth as a cruel, horrible man, a notion also put forth by Holinshed.
Changes were made by Shakespeare in his writing of Holinshed’s three weird sisters. Shakespeare transforms the weird sisters into ugly androgynous hags and they distinctly take on a more sinister role than was assigned to them in Holinshed’s Chronicles.
