In the beginning we see Hamlet sitting alone with a scrapbook reminiscing about his dead father, the king. Then, after a few moments his friend walks in and he is told that he must return to dinner with the royal family and company. In this he reveals his true problem with this whole situation, that his mother married Claudius so soon after Hamlet’s father’s death. Later on in the play we discover that Claudius killed Hamlet’s father and Hamlet chooses to act upon it. Many people, myself included, write off Cumberbatch due to him being “overrated” according to most. However, after seeing Hamlet I am more than impressed with his depiction of the character. In some scenes, such as the play within a play where they are showing Claudius a play about essentially what was the dead king’s murder, Benedict Cumberbatch simply made facial expressions to convey what his character was thinking or feeling at that moment in time. Also, when there was a long monologue, Cumberbatch would stress different words vocally through a change of pitch. Not only did this change in the vocal structure of the speech make it more interesting, but gave more insight as to what the end goal was for Hamlet.
