For this paper I will be covering Phoenix Productions INC DBA Shakespeare From the Heart (SFTH)
SFTH began in 1999 when a group of friends wanted to use their love of acting to help raise money for local charities. The group started with people who loved to be on stage and those who had not ever even set foot on a stage. The group had no formal backing and made everything themselves. They built sets out of ply board flats and tarps. Handmade costumes from clothes purchased by the members from consignment stores. The group suffered a bit from some incumbents trying to do things only their way as well as no one having administrative knowledge for a charitable organization. Dustin performed this task via monthly meetings of the entire organization, emails, and text messaging. If necessary, he would call a person directly when they were not responding via other means. This had a unique value to the organization because no other theater group in the area was being run as a business like this. The fact that the organization had multiple directors for each piece of the organization and that they all were kept on the same page by Dustin was a game changer. This enabled the organization to deepen the relationship with the sponsors, the chosen charity, and members who finally felt like they had a voice. However, during the month or two before each show we did have some stress caused by the organization and responsibilities taking up much more time than we would have liked. Overall, the mood of the organization was pleasant. Aside from a few instances where a personality conflict or a difference in thinking on how a planned goal should be achieved caused some strife. Usually any differences were resolved by Dustin or the entire board making a final say. The rest of the organization knew that any consequences from an approved path of action taken would be handled by Dustin and the board.
• What are the common stories told and what is the meaning behind the stories? Common stories were mainly about past performances and what worked versus what didn’t work. Occasionally stories about past directors or actors and what did not work were used as examples of what not to do. Often these stories were from the prior incarnation of the organization because of how poorly it had been run and how much people had played favorites and put people into acting roles that they were not worthy of.
