Online Education Programs The online education industry is a huge market which spreads out over various segments. In recent years, the demand for online learning for adult students has skyrocketed. “Market research firm Global Industry Analysts projects it will reach $107 Billion in 2015” (McCue, 2014). Online education ranges from trade and professional associations, community colleges, universities, continuing education programs and executive education models. Many of the people pursuing these programs wish to better their lives, or hope to advance in their careers. According to Marcus, “Facing skeptical customers, declining enrollment, and antiquated financial model that is hemorrhaging money, and new kinds of low-cost competition, some of U.S. universities and colleges may be going the way of the music and journalism industries” (Marcus, 2013). Some financial analysts think things are so bad that bond-rating agencies and regulators are throwing up red flags, an estimate shows that as many as one third could be experiencing financial difficulties. In many situations the cost to operate is rising more quickly than revenues are coming in to cover them. I personally feel that the shakeout stage in online education passed many years ago. A good university which offers a quality education at a reasonable price should have no problem making it through all of the industry life cycles. If a university fails to keep up with the quickly growing technology trends, I could see them running into financial issues which could cause them to close their doors. A college degree is becoming more and more important in the workforce, it is almost impossible to land a good job without going to a secondary
