Shadowing Reflection

On October 11, I job shadowed Matt Henderson from Henderson Brandt & Vieth, P.A. from 8:30 - 4:40. It was located in downtown Spartanburg, therefore they were one of most recommended from the SC Judicial Department. I shadowed a law firm to experience a lawyer's day-to-day life.

When I arrived, he introduced himself and we sat in his office. His office was cluttered with boxes full of cases from wall-to-wall. On his desk, there were a ton of papers. The first thing he did in the morning is answer emails and return phone calls. Around nine he had a house closing with a lovely couple. After that I sat in the conference room because he had to do dictations for his cases. At eleven o’clock he had a will signing with a middle-age couple. Before handing them the papers, he would have a personal conversation with them so then they would feel comfortable. After that he handed them the will and they checked them before signing off. During the signing, his client asked him a real estate question. The question was about his builder backing out of their deal but still going to build the house. He asked if he should go to court about it and Mr. Henderson gave him his personal opinion saying that he didn’t have enough evidence and that he more than likely wouldn’t win. After that Mr. Henderson went to the YMCA to work out. While he was doing that I rewrote some of my interview questions to make them more relevant to Mr.

On Thursday, September 22nd at 4:00 p.m., I witnessed the Beebe v. Bozeman Deaconess Health Service, Inc. court case. The judge for this case was Judge Holly Brown. I walked into the court room while they were on recess, so I was a little confused about what was going on at first. It was interesting to be a part of the “please rise” standing ritual when the judge walked in. It makes a person wonder why the benches in the public’s seating area are so noisy, it seemed very disruptive.…

While at Rutgers I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge on living systems from the level of a single molecule to an entire organism. I have been able to do this both in the classroom and while shadowing a physician. While these two types of learning are very different, they both are vital aspects of having a holistic education in the biological sciences. Through my major in Cell Biology and Neuroscience, I have also been able to build on my biology foundation by delving more deeply into neuroscience, the facet of the life sciences that most interests me. I also have had hands-on experience working at the cellular level in my laboratory and have developed a comfort with the material allowing me to explain it to others.…

James Ferguson with Global Shadows: Africa in the Neoliberal World Order and John and Jean Comaroff with Ethnicity, Inc. use an African-centered anthropological approach in order to conceptualize politics of “belonging” in the neoliberal global order. Both examine identity politics centered around inclusion and exclusion in light of transforming citizenships and sovereignties, and advocate for a re-assessment of taken-for-granted assumptions utilized by the discipline. Ferguson and the Comaroffs aim to examine anthropological theory from an African perspective by analyzing phenomena specific to the region, and both find that this approach reveals common trends along citizenship and identity politics across the globe. However, Global Shadows…

The Dream of the Rood The Dream of the Rood is an Old English, allegorical retelling of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ from a different point of view. Many seem to think this poem is only told from the point of view of the cross that Jesus was crucified on, but an additional interpretation is that this story is told seemingly through the point of view of a normal man, but in all actuality it is the retelling of the vision that Jesus had before he was arrested and his acceptance of his duty to be sacrificed for the forgiveness of sinners. There are three sections of The Dream of the Rood.…
