The first segment that had an effect on me was The Wounded Knee Massacre. The Wounded Knee Massacre is painful to hear and read about for me because it involved the murder of many innocent and unarmed women and children and it all happened because of an accidental gun discharge. America’s battle with the Native American’s could have all been avoided if we were not so bent on expanding and acquiring as much land as possible and respected the fact that they were there first. The second segment was the almost lynching of James Cameron and the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith. The picture that was showed was that of Thomas and Abram and it is really upsetting to see. The two individuals were only teenagers and even though they had robbed and murder a man they did not deserve the beating and lynching they had received. What is really upsetting is the faces of the individuals in the crowd. Many look happy and pleased with what they have done and all look like this is a normal part of life. It all begins at birth in their interactions with their parents, relatives, and culture. It progresses as they grow with them making friends and relationships with people who believe the same things they do. Most never bother to question their views simply seeing their parent’s views as what is right. In turn they keep their intolerance views and end up passing them along to their children and the cycle repeats itself until one brave sole decides to change. Right now, in our country we are faced with the individual’s intolerance of Muslims, gays and lesbians, transsexuals, and Mexicans. Our President enacted a travel ban that restricted travel from eight nations six of them being predominantly Muslim to the United States. Many shops have discriminated against gays and lesbians citing their religious views. North Carolina passed a law forcing transgender individuals to use the bathroom of the sex at birth. Finally, the President has also promised to build a bigger better wall to keep Mexican immigrants out of America and has ended DACA putting thousands of people at risk of deportation. Some ways to promote tolerance is by making laws, educating each other, and raising awareness. While laws wont completely solve our problems, nor will they immediately stop bigotry, it will help lead us in the right direction by forcing our federal and state governments to treat everyone equal,
