Sexually Transmitted Infections
The entire Earth’s populous will become sick during their life, but one group of maladies is effectively avoidable. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections caused by bacteria that thrives in or around the genitals and are spread by contact with them. Every sexually active person is at risk for an STI, risk is reduced to zero when abstinence is practiced; reduced when a monogamous relationship is established for a long period of time, and when safer sex is practiced (condoms). Millions of people contract STIs every year, which makes understanding, treating, and protecting against them significant to prevent their …show more content…
It is caused most commonly by Herpes simplex virus-2, however occasionally Herpes simplex virus- 1 can cause the infection (the herpes which causes cold sores). Herpes is highly contagious, and incurable, however, medication can help to shorten or prevent outbreaks of sores ("Genital Herpes - CDC Fact Sheet," 2016). Sores are typically mildly painful and shallow. The sores build up liquid then pop- similarly to blisters. Additionally, they can last up to 3 weeks ("Genital Herpes - CDC Fact Sheet," 2016). The spread of herpes is most efficient from contact of fluids from the sores, an important note however is that the infection can spread a number of other ways including any kind of skin to skin contact. The usage of condoms may help to decrease the risk of spread in conjunction with medications, but once infected, risk of infecting partners will never vanish. Of the people infected 85% will have recurrent outbreaks for the rest of their lives, but in others the infection simply lays dormant ("Genital Herpes - CDC Fact Sheet," 2016). Genital herpes is generally not a serious condition, but in rare cases can cause; meningitis, an infection of the fluid and tissues that surround the brain and spinal cord; encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, usually the result of a viral infection; and, inflammation of the lower spinal cord and surrounding nerves ("Other Health Problems Caused by Herpes Simplex Virus," n.d.). Which may lead to an inability to urinate, loss of feeling and muscle strength in the legs, and constipation. With proper precautions people with Herpes can continue to live full and healthy
