What are STDs (sexually transmitted diseases)? STDs are a disease that many people get from being sexually active. Some STDs are caused by different things other than being sexually active, such as sharing the same bedding, the same towel, same clothing, and toilet seats. Some STDs men will have symptoms and women won’t have symptoms. Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease that can be treated with antibiotics, it can be spread by doing oral, vaginal, or anal sex, Genital herpes is very common it affects 10 to 40 million Americans, Gonorrhea symptoms usually appear only in the male, similar to Chlamydia, it can occur in the cervix, penis, throat, and rectum and it is caused by bacteria (Levchuck 80). Gonorrhea can leave men and women infertile and places them at a higher risk of getting AIDS (Sommer 39). Herpes can be spread from the mouth to the genitals during oral sex (Levchuck 81).
