Whether it’s Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or Vine, more than half of the globe are connected through a site that allows you to share photos, videos and comments. Despite this large number, women in social media are being degraded. Advertisements in social media demean women to a very large extent. Women in advertisements are portrayed as ‘dumb’, ‘sexy’ and ‘easy’. “Portraying women in media as sexuzlized, weak, powerless and victimized continues to be a trend for advertisers… women are portrayed as mere objects meant to serve someone else's purpose” (Harman, 2010). A 2007 Dolce and Gabbana advertisement showed a women wearing a scandalous outfit being held down by a bare chested man while other men looked on. Previously, Dolce and Gabbana’s Fall 2006 Ready-To-Wear collection was made up of photos where a female is stark naked as male onlookers get close. Since they launched this first advertisement over ten years ago, their advertisements have become more and more inappropriate, to the point of disgust. Social media is the perfect place to share your experiences, talents and in many cases, your body. “30% of women check and post on their social media outlets multiple times per day” (Clifford, 2014). With the increase in the number females that watch others, as well as themselves share experiences, talents and the body for the world to see, pressure to be just like these others tends to kick in. It is a known fact that social media affects the way a women thinks about herself and views her personality and body. Many females feel the need to be skinny, picture perfect and appear differently on a daily basis, so that they are able to match their favorite celebrities which they follow on social media sites. Unfortunately, our celebrities flaunt their bodies’ in extremely inappropriate ways on social media sites, which influences teenagers
