Research Question:
Music plays a big role in today's society. There are many different forms of music and it is often categorized into genres. The most generic and arguably the most popular would be pop music (hence the name). Pop music has evolved over the decades but there seems to be a growth in the sexual content in this type of music. As pop music is incredibly popular, what are the affects of this sexualization on teenagers and young adults? If the main source of music young adults and teenagers are being exposed to is full of sexualization what are they going to think of themselves or other people? What are the negative affects of sex being glamourized in popular music?

It looks into the sexualization in lyrics in pop music. It focus' on the last year of six decades from 1959 to 2009. This article breaks up pop music into sub categories such as: male groups, female groups, male solo artists, etc. Then each song was categorized again by the ethnicity of the artist(s). Songs were then separated into songs with sexual reference and songs without sexual reference; once a song was considered to have a sexual reference it was placed in another subcategory with other songs with similar references (e.g. Songs that included kissing were places together, or songs that were about sexual readiness were placed together, etc). Songs were also separated on account of sexualization. Songs that had similar values when talking about sexual partners were grouped together, or songs that sexually objectified someone were grouped together. In all cases they found that throughout the decades the amount of degrading increased in song lyrics, and that the sexualization grew over the time they studied. This pertains to the research project because it is important to know if and how sexualization is increasing over time. To know how sex in music effects us, we must first know that it is there and see how it is …show more content…
Artists are placed into genres of music and there is also a cultural classification. The article focuses in on how many females who want to be professional singers can not sing the style of music they wish to. It talks about how a female artist must become a “pop princess” to be successful. The article also talks about how artists typically have to sexualize themselves to be successful. It gives examples such as 1970's “Cock-Rock”, and female pop artists in general. The author uses examples of female artists who use sexualization, power and control to promote their artistry such as Madonna. The author continues to talk about how the sexualization of all artists has changed over the years. The article also compares the differences of “pop princesses” and femme fatals”, but explains how both of these categories come back to the sexualization of the artist. This article is relevant to the research project because a major part of the sexualization in music is the sexualization of the artists themselves. If most popular music artists are being sexualized then that is going to effect those looking up to those artists. Taking a closer look into how the artists are being sexualized gives us more of an idea of what teenagers and young adults are seeing, which helps us look at the effects more

This documentary "Dreamworlds- Desire, Sex, and Power in music Videos" tries to explain how the popular culture influences contemporary music video and how this is affecting today’s culture. “Dreamworlds” insists that these narratives and cultural attitudes have shaped these music videos into sexualizing women, and filtering the identities of both men and women into “myths” about sexuality and gender. The subject group in these music videos tended to be mostly about women and how they are misrepresented and used in popular culture. Overall I agree with the film message that these music videos are misleading and only demonstrated with one point of view in which the audience can see through. For instance, the women are sexualized and presented as mere objects of for the video and men as well.…

Songs are poems set to music. They come in all different varieties, genres and styles but often the message conveyed is similar. In modern music the message or theme usually relates to love or substance abuse. A few decades ago, the messages were comparable, and even though society was quite different then, the themes in music were relatively the same. Two such examples are “Come a Little Bit Closer” by Jay and the Americans and “A Woman Needs Love” by Ray Parker Jr. Both of these songs share a common idea of women cheating.…

I can remember being a senior in high school and hearing this song with my mom in the car; it was so awkward and I was surprised that such obvious sexual references were not censored on the radio. Trey Songz hit song "Bottoms Up" refers to drinking alcohol in the club, the song also refers to drunk women as " a chicken and a goose" and the man is planning on having a threesome with these drunk women. The songs by women had a softer tone about sex. The song "Put it down" by Brandy offers dialog of a woman challenging a man to be chivalrous, yet sexy if he wants her to fall in love with him. Nicki Minaj's song "Super Bass" eludes to the artist wanting to be with a guy that is both an entrepreneur and a bad boy; it also mentions drugs, sex and…

As a reaction to gender roles in the 1960s, feminism and queer theory became popular and made gender contentiously relate to rock music in early 1970s. In 1960s, women were disrespected in rock culture. The society still considered each sex comes with its own essential characteristics, such as aggressive for men and weak for girls. As the first stage of feminism began in west countries, musicians focus on topics about gender. Thus many contentious songs that mentioned about feminism, transgender, and homosexual appeared in early the 1970s.…

The title of this article is “Contraindications in a Hip-Hop World: An Ethnographic Study of Black Women Hip-Hop Fans in Washington, DC.,” written by Tia L. Smith-Cooper. This article was published with UMI Microform in June 2002. In this article, Tia L. Smith-Cooper is scrutinizing the current (in 2002) problem of male rappers objectifying females and women still being content with this fact and continuing to be hip-hop fans. Not only does she attack male rappers, she also attacks female rappers such as Lil’ Kim in which the author believes she condones the fact that sex should, in a sense, be a form of currency to gain money and material things. Some may feel like Tia took a sort of feministic viewpoint on this matter.…

Jazz, blues, and hip hop, to name a few, would not exist in the current state that they do today had it not been for all of the great artists who overcame racial intolerance and segregation through their art. Unfortunately, the period of social consciousness within musical entertainment has passed and an era of ignorance being spread through popular music has transpired in its place.…
