When dealing with the nude ideas of pornography are always involved, Nead (1992) talks about the balance between art and pornography. A relationship that is unavoidable with the sexuality surrounding the nude and leading directly to the idea of sex and perversion. Avoided concepts in society. Because of this delicate line, it is said that sexual impulses can not be avoid when criticising nude art (Nead, 1992). Sexuality, ones capacity for sexual feelings, in art is considered highly controversial. Society has a problems with displays of nudity. Modernist love to demystify the female form and idea, commonly done in the depiction of nudes in a documented way (Nead, 1992). Sirens visit to NY impressed her with the museum of sex’s approach to sexuality academically and analysing it in terms of history,prostitution, gender identity and other such approaches (O 'Brien, 2009). Figure 1 being early work only shows a reference to these concepts, though does depict the contemporary documented look at the female form. The use of a documentary style with the stark white background and unobstructed view of the centered and framed subject matter creates this museum like categorising photography. The photos’ use of a nude leads to many problems being raised such as the balance between art and pornography and the feminist critique of the nude. Art made to create controversy. Addresses ideas of the female in society, gender roles being challenged, gender inequality and feminist views. Siren shows her celebration for sexuality and distaste for the mass produced in her overlapping forms. Her documentary style photography centered on her critique of gender and sexuality and creates an environment where one is drawn in to critique the nude photo themselfs. In history the nude was only accepted as a divine being and has slowly become more accepted in art though is still confronting to the viewer, as is the idea of ambiguity for the lack of identity is disturbing. This research into the feminist view of the nude and sexuality has lead me to understand how the world is never balanced and despite ongoing debates change is slow. The nude is a subject of great discussion and controversy.
