The piece can now be seen in Louvre Museum in France. The subject of the piece is the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ as a baby. During that 13th century, the Virgin Mary was favored to being the subject of many artworks. The piece represents the passion of love that Mary has for her son.…
The social view on adolescent sexuality varies across cultures, societies, communities, and families. It is a controversial topic because some individuals perceive sexuality as an important development of a teenager’s gender and identity, while others are opposed to the sexual interaction of adolescence. In the book Not Under My Roof, Amy Schalet demonstrates that in the Netherlands, society provides information and support about sexuality to teenagers. The normalization of sexual behavior in the Netherlands has allowed teenagers to develop a greater control over their sexual desires. In contrast, America’s perspective of adolescent sexuality makes the experience unenjoyable to young adults.…
Carved in the Hellenistic period, Draped Relief of Youth is a relief by an unknown artist from Europe. Today this sculpture is on display in the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University. Through the use of symmetric geometry, vertical directionality, and interplay between light and shadow, the artist of Draped Relief of Youth captures the essence of youth, namely ephemerality and unblemished form. A detailed description of the essence of youth, and physical characteristics of this image create a framework that can be used to understand how this artist creates a powerful effect.…
With her art operating as a means to appropriate the female figure in a different way, here Saville aims to criticise male fantasy and show the strength and power of being a woman alone, a critique even stating that “She has recalled the tensions of vulnerability, strength and power evident within the figure’s posture, the low-viewing point which suggests reflexive self-examination and appraisal” . The piece, displaying a large nude, portrays a woman looking down at the viewer and underneath her gaze, the woman’s body calls upon a representation of beauty that does not fit into a patriarchal mould of flawlessness. This is further emphasised through the lines that circle what the woman would consider her “problem areas” or “flaws”, the dark…
Hist/Wmns 313 1. I thought the reading by Walker-Bynum was very interesting. I have never thought of the idea that Christ could be seen as female. I learned a lot of reasons as to why people thought they saw the body of Christ as female. It surprised me that people thought it because most people always see Christ as a man just because men seem to have more power and a bigger part in history in general.…
In My Brilliant Friend, Ferrante reveals that the change from childhood to adolescence is scary and upsetting because the breakdown of innocence occurs. In the first chapter of Adolescence, Lila’s experience of “dissolving margins” (2) is symbolic of what occurs in every child during puberty. Furthermore, Ferrante symbolizes change with the motif of fire, which is seen in the fireworks display. During the display, Lila feels disgust towards the changes she sees in her brother and repulsion towards the human body, which “seem[s] to her attributes of monstrous beings” (39). Lila’s disgust of the body is representative of the disgust most children may feel about their own bodies, and the unveiling of the changes in Rino is symbolic of a loss of…
As political intentions increase and the focus into personal issues such as Australian identity and mental health gain the mass media’s attention, the National Portrait Gallery of Australia’s National Photographic Portrait Prize 2018 accurately depicts the psychological inner life an individual and the constraining forces that make them into the individual portrayed in the image. The exhibition displays 43 photographs from photographers around Australia, the collections representing modern Australian youth culture and the issues and beliefs that shape its own identity in a bravely optimistic manner. The works of Filomena Rizz and Laura Sikes if not particularly encapsulate the whole collection, raising themes surrounding mental health, stigmas…
Throughout the depths of the world’s artistic history, there have been many constants and many outliers. In the past few millennia, one of the former has always been the discovery of sculptural severed heads. Whether they be cast in bronze, carved from marble or stone, or formed from rare precious metals and gems, much of the culture and events can be derived from these findings, many of which were a-‘head’ of their time. The first piece to be highlighted is, uncoincidentally, also the first accurate depiction of a human face ever discovered by archaeologists: the Warka Head or, alternatively, the Mask of Warka.…
Renowned for her brutal renderings of Biblical scenes with female protagonists, Artemisia Gentileschi was one of the most prominent artists of the Baroque movement, backed by the patronages of the House of Medici and Charles I of England in a time especially hostile toward woman artists. Yet, despite her death in the seventeenth century, misogyny persists even in contemporary scholarship of Gentileschi. In both of their articles, Whitney Chadwick and Mary D. Garrard deliberate how gender and sexuality factors in Gentileschi’s artistic agency and her work. Through how they discuss Gentileschi as an artist herself and their visual analysis, both affirm Gentileschi’s influence as a woman art, however, both differ in their approaches with Chadwick…

Edvard Munch painted the famous painting which he named “The Scream” to represent his past. The painting consists of a child standing at the edge of the road facing a different direction from his companions who seem to be walking towards a different direction. The child is screaming while facing the departing companions. “The Scream” is a name given to represent each of the four versions of his paintings which are kept at the Munch museum. The aim of this paper is to analyze the painting.…
Have you ever wondered how we, as humans, developed our sexual tendencies? Or perhaps you have wondered why and how it is that humans across the globe are generally attracted to certain traits in potential partners despite differences in culture. There are countless questions that people may have about sex, flirting, dating, love, and any other subcategory that falls under personal relationships – these same people may often find it difficult to ask the questions that they have been harboring. Sex is such a taboo topic in America, which unfortunately means that many of these questions go unanswered, leading to confusion, anger, or awkwardness in an individual’s sex life. Author Joann Ellison Rodgers released her book, “Sex: A Natural History”, in 2002; in her book, Rodgers addresses topics that we all have questioned at one point or another.…
Some posited numerous interpretations by stating that she is a Lisa del Giacondo, the wife of the Florentine merchant Francesco di Bartolomeo del Giocondo. Some came out with a theory that the model is Leonardo’s mother because of the sitter’s mysterious smile. The third suggestion was that the painting was in fact it is Leonardo himself disguising as a women to make an artist’s riddle, they did found a bit resemblance between Mona Lisa and Leonardo. But the sad truth is the identity has not been conclusively proven yet. That what makes this portrait interesting and attracts people to actually see the real portrait in the museum (Mona Lisa…
In the novel “Nana”, Zola depicted a picture of naturalistic fictional word in which the character’s surrounding and social environment was described. Through the incidences happened on those characters, it lets us to figure out insights and beliefs about French Society in 19th century. The conflict between the religious mysticism and sensuality is the point of discussion in “Nana”. Sexual empowerment and desires were heavily emphasized in the novel as the sensorial images and descriptions regarding to those characters were portrayed. The reason I choose this topic is that Zola used a naturalistic way to depict the character’s life, unlike other literatures where the emotion of characters and idealism were artificially distorted by the narrator.…
